That is excellent work. I'm sure this will come in handy for some of us.

well that just kicks ass cause i will have a s-afc1 in my hands in a few days

Thats cool. How much does one of those things cost? Might have to buy one and mess around with that once I get on the dyno.

RPSport-Johndate not saved · #5

he's pretty much right about the wideband but not about the dyno, you really dont need a dyno for an afc seeing how there are only 8 points of fuel adjustment on the afc 1 and i think 12 on the 2, and only an anolog knob on the afc. but they are not hard to tune you just plus or minus fuel to the existing map.

As well, once a desired a/f/boost enviroment is created the egt should be used to show limits of ingnition advance against performance output.

These are the basics of tuning.

Ok, if you want to run all that boost on the 20g with the larger injectors i would suggest a 300Zx (z32)afm, as well as a modular tps (s13) with an afc 2. And dial in the z afm code.

What AFM code did you use for the S12's AFM that would be nice to know..

that's cool

sorry but this is off topic...but did you decide against the whole suspension thing that you were talking about a few months back?

I used 04.

I used 04.
With the safc2 I used the same settings as apex recomends for the s-13 ca18det engine. This engine uses the same air flow meter so it works perfect.

hm you only have a +-20% adjustablilty of injectors, where as the s-afc2 has +-50%

Optional Harnesses

Below are some optional accessories available for the GReddy E-Manage System. They are NOT necessary and can be added at any time to get more features out of your e-Manage system. Additional features that are built into the system, but are only accessible though the use of GReddy's PC-Windows based "e-Manage Support Tool" communication software (Meaning you would need to find an Authorized GReddy Support Dealer). These features are a 16x16 Airflow Adjustmemt Map, Larger Main Injector correction adjustment, Upgrade Air Flow Meter adjustment, Boost Limiter Cut, Anti-engine Stall, VTEC-fuel adjustment, Real-time Map Trace, Real-time Display, Real-time Communication, and basic Data-logging.
With the use of Greddy's "Optional Injector Harness" and the software, the unit has the ability to control an additional 16x16 Injector duty cycle Map and the Controls for adding up to 2 Addional Sub-injectors. If the "Optional Ignition Harrness" and the software is used the unit has the ability to control a 16x16 Ignition Timing Map. All of the above Maps can also be Map-traced in Real-time as well. If the factory range of Map or Airflow meter is surpassed, you can incorperate our "Optional GReddy Pressure Sensor and Pressue Harness" to set larger scales of ajustment

ahh i see thanks for clearing that up...

i've got a question for you kids that used the safc code 04 for the input/output. i recently got a safc I and it shows the ca18det code as being 07, not 04. the code for 04 is the rb20et (which matches the ca18et wiring harness). did they change the the codes between safc I and safc II?

i still have massive high idle problems even with -15% fueling on either maf code (using 310 injectors). it doesn't want to start very smoothly either... maybe i should just switch back to the stock injectors...

hmm might need to get a wide band o2 to tune it with

I\'ve had One Equals Two\'s car for a few weeks while it has been undergoing some \"upgrades\". Today, I decided to install an S-AFC II... and it works!

Guess what else, the wiring diagrams for the S12 with a CA18et are in the S-AFC install manual. The diagram for the R31 Skyline with the RB20e and et engines match the ca18et ECU exactly. The throttle position sensor wire is not used (however, it could be), but everything else is. I am enclosing some pictures of the functioning unit and the ECU pinouts.

I also spun the distributor over by hand and got an rpm reading.

This is the pinout for the R31, it matches the CA18et S12 exactly.

bartc_jJul 6, 2004, 5:26 am · #13

now would this also work the same as the s-afc I as well or just the s-afc II

MrBobJul 6, 2004, 5:30 am · #14

The pinouts on the ECU are going to be the same either way, but just in case I did check the pinouts in the S-AFC I manual and its the same diagram.

honest_jimJul 6, 2004, 9:16 am · #15

I wired one in a couple of months back now I used the throttle position sensor from an s-13 (ca18det) All it needs is a 5 volt feed then your SAFC 2 wil be able to determine throttle position.

Did you notice any difference in performance? I turned up the fuel right across the rev range and it seemed to make the car realy fly.

Ive now made a new fuel rail and got some 375cc injectors and fitted a walbro fuel pump. When I get the fuel rail and injectors fitted ill let you all know how it turns out.

I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone install an S-AFC to only make changes on a dyno with a wideband o2 sensor.  You can seriously hurt your engine by making guesses as to where you should add or subtract fuel.  Do the smart thing and spend the money to do it right.  Just my 2 cents.

I would never setup an S-AFC with an EGT gauge, or an Air/fuel gauge.  A wideband o2 sensor, yes.  An EGT gauge just doesn\'t react fast enough to be accurate, and air/fuel gauges suck anyway.

bartc_jJul 6, 2004, 6:38 pm · #19

ya wideband and a open road is all you need

sidewaysJul 6, 2004, 7:09 pm · #20

i had mine tuned with a wideband o2 the first time and then i did some work on the car and i got it almost the same as a dyno and a wideband 02.  sure it isn\'t going to be exact but you can get a good base map and then just play around with the numbers.  i prefer my method for 3 reasons

1) Cost: Dyno\'s are pretty expensive  and even more so if you are using their wideband.

2) my closest dyno is 1.5 hours away.  that shop specializes in mustangs and have no idea how to tune safc.   i could go to fla and have it done again but by the time i buy gas and a hotel i am way up their in price

3) i would rather tune for driveability than a dyno.

best thing to do is take your time and mess with it.  as long as you keep your maps rich you shouldn\'t have any problems

Alex FrostJul 9, 2004, 1:18 pm · #21

Read the EGT thread in the CA18ET section...I would hope it makes you think twice before you use it to tune...and I too would like to kmow the cost of the S-AFC I or II. Cool

Mr.200Jul 9, 2004, 1:43 pm · #22

You can pick up an SAFC for under $200 cdn used, SAFC-1 for about $300, SAFC-2 $350-ish

zectorJul 9, 2004, 2:19 pm · #23

How hard is it to tune the car with a SAFC-1 or SAFC-2?

I have never tuned a car electronicly before, but Im good at computers and I know that I can gain power by adjusting ignitiontiming, fuel and such.

Im fitting a thottlebody from a S13 (RS13), with electronics on it, so Id guess I have a S13/RS13 TPS to play with also.

What can you do with the SAFC? (I was planing to buy a SMT6 or 7, but I want to examine the alternatives)

The mods Il do to my car, to need a piggyback computer is:
 Walbro fuelpump.
 Custom fuelrail.
 370cc RS13 injectors.
 Ported & Polished head.
Higher boost (15-22PSI) with a Mitsubishi TD04-15t turbo.

But before that I need to break the engine in after its renovation. (I have bought some new parts for the engine: Ignition parts, gaskets, pistonrings, bearings, drivebelts, cambelt, cambelt tensioner... and so on. ($750 usd!)

i dont think that the right a/f meter code... it should be two sets of numbers.

The numbers represent cryptic algorythims to set the voltage for minumum and maximum voltage of the meter.

This is why i suggest the s13 or z32 maf, becasue the #\"s are widely known.

one_equals_twoJul 26, 2004, 8:31 pm · #27

There is two sets of numbers, 04 and 04.  That is for the CA18DET MAF in, and CA18DET MAF out.  There isn\'t anything cryptic about it.  If you want to go with the Z32 MAF, you would select a different number for the Z32 MAF in, and the CA18DET MAF out.  This way it compensates for the different flow characteristics of the MAF sensor.

Have any of you guys ever thought about having your ECu tuned by JWT? I had my CA18ET ECU tuned (I had it a long time ago and since sold it...) And it was a difference of night and day.....The other option better than an AFC would be Greddy\'s E-mannage....I have it on my S13 and its dope.....Its either tunable by knobs on the control unit, or can be plugged into a laptop to be tuned (Real time adjusting and fuel maps/graphs, along with timming and some other stuff.....) This is only about 300 dollars for the base unit and about 500 for everything minus the lap-top.....it is the closest thing to Stand alone EMS and is a wonderfull tool......You can also pay for the 500 dollar greddy E-01 boost controller and eliminate the laptop while being able to watch real time management.....

-Just an option....
