Im going to swap my S12 steringwheel to a RS13's. But how do I get the old wheel of? I have unscrewed all the screws I could find under the "horn" and it looks like I just have to pull the wheel of, but I have been pulling on the wheel and its not loosening, have I forgoten something or do I just need more force?

You need whats called a "Steering wheel puller" I reccomend you check to see if your local parts store has one you can RENT. But taking off a steering wheel requires ALOT of force. Thats what the puller helps you with.

try hitting on the sides of it from the back of it. I've never had to use a steering wheel puller and I'm not superman.

any sort of puller will work

I used a gear puller lol.

the only thing you had to unscrew after getting the horn off was the nut on the steering column..you'll need to keep that too.

so take off that nut and then use a puller of some sort and it'll just come off.

Ok, sound fair. Looking around after a "Steering wheel puller" right now.

Make sure you pulled that HUGE nut off the center of the wheel first.

After that slide the seat all the way back and grab the wheel where the 2 supports are. Then pull evenly on both sides until your side splits.

If it didnt come off then get a hammer and tap lightly on the bolt that the wheel is on. Then pull again, only this time alternate pressure from left to right. You still need pressure on the "non pressure" side, just apply a little more pressure to one side at a time. You will feel it start to loosen and then it will just pop off.

When you put the new one on dont put the nut back on until you have driven the car down the street in a straight line. Once you are SURE the wheels are pointing straight then just line up the top of the wheel and put the nut on.

When I did my I just shook the wheel by pushing on one side and pulling on the other and vice versa, you know..........I was mad, real mad. Oh, wear a helmet, when my wheel came off it hit my head, ouch.

Pull and wiggle really dont need a puller. Took me less than 5 minutes to swao everything.

Vicious-Sdate not saved · #11

yeah, a puller isn't really that necessary, but it is nice if you don't want a bloody nose. for the s13 steering wheel, just yank off the whole horn part... it gets to be a pain in the ass if you take off the rubber. maybe get really mad first, steering wheels are good for taking out anger.

hah they are good to hit but they hurt lol.. well my momo race duz haha

Little Bit of information....the S13's came with HICAS and NONHICAS Steering Wheels (something to do with electricals).....i'm not sure if it is the same with the Rs13 (180SX in aust)....but if it is u need a NONHICAS steeringwheel.

zectordate not saved · #14

The swedish RS13 (89-) dont have HISCAS.

I have already mounted the new steeringwheel, looks great and fits the car perfectly.

I have also mounted RS13 front seats, they require making 3 new mounting holes for each seat, but man... its a new car now.

I had no problems removing my std. steering wheel, but my aftermarket one is stuck like hell!! And it's not straight!

Think I need a puller.... It won't budge.

Im only 15 1/2 and I pulled off my steering wheel. All I did was take off the horn and un screw the nut in the middle of the wheel and pulled. I admit it took all of my strength put after some hard gritten I yanked it off and I landed in my seat.

Oh, wear a helmet, when my wheel came off it hit my head, ouch.

And a protective cup

Feet up on the dash, seat reclined ... much hilarity for everyone not involved.

LOL
Here's a tip for you fella's.

When you undo the nut in the middle only undo it half way. THEN pull on the wheel. The wheel comes unstuck but doesnt hit you in the head! Then undo the nut and take off the wheel with no hassles.

Learn from others mistakes.

Toxic.

Just make sure to leave some threads (at least 2-3) other wise with the nut still on, when you pull the wheel you could in theory at least strip the threads off the end of the shaft, and that would not be cool...
