Im rebuilding my CA18ET engine from scratch, new bearings, pistonrings, gaskets etc. I have bought 4L of Castrol GTX Magnatec 5w40 syntetic oil.
Is this a good choice? if so why? and if not, why?
Should I use this oil from the start, or get some other oil to use for the engine break-in?, if so, what oil?
What oil to use?

This is what I would do!!!
First off I would use cheap non synthetic oil. Start the engine and run it for around 2 minutes. Then change the oil filter and oil. The oil will take care of the dirst and stuff that are left in the engine. Even if you clean it like crazy there will still be stuff in there.
After that new cheap non sythetic oil again and new filter. Drive it for maybe 4-500km and then swap the oil to what you prefer. Also swap the filter.
From what I understand the non sythetic oil is thicker and will stay on the parts for a little longer.
yea I have heard using synthtic oil from the begining can screw up how the engine wears in becuase it is so slippery. I would use regular oil and then switch to synthetic after the first 1000 miles or do what Zman said.
Again I agree too.
Use regular dino juice for the first 20 minutes or so. Drain and change filter. Put more dino juice in. drive for say 500 KM and then drain and change filter. More dino juice. Drive for another 3000-5000 KMS and then drain and change filter. Place in whatever you want.
ok, sounds like a good plan, (expensive, but good..)
Since Im investing good money to the engine it would be very stupid to let it go to waste because of bad oil choice :)
please do not use synthetic when starting a new engine. I ran 10W-40 a slightly thicker oil for the hot augusta air and for the turbo. I ran it for 1003 miles and then changed to a 10W-30 Full synthetic blend by Mobil 1. My dad uses this in his van and has gone 8K miles w/o changing the oil and it still looks decently clean when changing it.
Do not run syntheic right off the bat though.
No, Im looking into what mineral oil I should use atm.
Here's what the motor company told me when I got my remanufactured engine....
Use non synthetic 10w-30 oil, and change the filter and oil every 500 miles for the first 3000 miles. From there, another 3000 miles of non synthetic. At 6000 miles change to synthetic blend. At 9000 miles go to full synthetic. Synthetic from there every 3000 miles.
Also, there is an interesting article in Sept. '04 Turbo magazine about selecting the right viscosity oil for your car. Thicker is not always better to help keep it cooler in hot weather......which is what I always thought, but according to the article it's not true. It puts more strain on the moving parts and less protection at start-up. I used 20w50 in my old motor for like 12 years! I wonder if this caused it a slow death?
