R200 is the name if the diff ur after,
R200's came in all Silvia's. U can get a S13 R200 Diff,
um, what else,,, a R31 Skyline GTS R200 Diff.
Ive got the Z31 300zx book, and it says that the R200 Diffs are excatly the same in the S12 and the Z31!
EXCEPT-
The Z31 has a Oil Cooler system,
the ratio's are a bit different, that dont matter that much,
and the Z31 takes more oil than the S12 R200,
Not sure why??...
The NA and Turbo ones are different ratio's,
Hope that might help...

LSD options for s12 (irs)
Basically you need a LONG NOSE type LSD. The S13-15 cars and R32+ Cars have short type.
R31-S12-Z31 have long nose lsds!
R180 - R200 will both fit on our cars!

is the R180 LSD??
Nissan I don't think made any LSD R180's, unless they had one in the front of a 4WD truck that had an LSD option. Datsun 510 people sometimes use Subaru-sourced R160 (?) LSD's from the rear of AWD models, there has been a little discussion on Zcar boards about this but you're losing strength by going to the smaller components (the "200" in R200 means 200mm ring gear, R180 has a smaller ring gear and R160 smaller yet). Just think about the fact that the Subaru is usually getting only 50% of its power going through that diff, and these are old Subarus putting out well under 200hp...Say you have a 200hp S12, so consider how long a mid-80's Subaru drivetrain would hold up to 400hp and a lead foot :-P Maybe a while? It would probably last a while, just may not have the longevity of the R180 or 200. Plus axles may be an issue.
The Z31 viscous LSD comes in 1988 (into 89?) Special Edition cars, these came from the factory in a pearl white color but I once pulled one out of a burgundy junkyard car (grrrrr....). The regular non-SE turbos had the clutch type into 1989 as well, and if you find an 87 be sure to check the diff because early production 87's I don't think had the LSD. 1984-86 Turbo's also did NOT have LSD.
I hadn't yet thought about the fact that you can use the VLSD in an S12, I got stuck with one a little while that I couldn't use in my Zcar since the axles are not compatible.
As for the 240SX VLSD, the diff. case won't be right but you can probably use the carrier in a long nose case if you have a ring and pinion to use. You then need to check for halfshaft compatability.
You can use the S13 VLSD, you just have to swap the carrier into your housing.
Now, a few members have done it. One sais he had to have 3 mm shaved off the halfshafts ... the others used the stock ones.
:dunno:
I can get a VLSD out of an S13 easy (they came factory here on all S13s with the DE) I just want to know fo sho (as well as fix everything else so I do actually need an LSD) before I go and pull one.
I put in an s13 VLSD and I just had to swap the internals into my case everything else I used was stock. I did change the oil seals, but everything else bolted right up.
Hmm ... are SE halfshafts different than the CAs?
Someone got the FAST and feel like finding out?
A couple more options. You can keep your current R200 diff and just order an LSD unit for it. I installed a Quaife lsd in my stock R200. The R200 came in two different flavors of ring gears - the 10mm and the 12mm. I have the 12mm R200 in my 87 SE, but I don't know what other S12's came with. If it's a 12mm R200, you can pretty much order any lsd unit (except viscous) made for a 240SX, Z31 300ZX, or NA Z32 300ZX. They will all bolt into the 12mm R200, regardless of whether they are long or short nose.
i think it has been awhile since anyone has really put all the information in one place, sorry if im wrong i just got my s12 and am a new member.... so this is what i have heard, please add to this or correct me...
clutch LSD out of 87-88 300zx turbo is clutch type and a bolt in swap
viscus LSD out of other years z31 300zx will work but need the halfshafts?
anyone know if the 240sx viscus LSD\'s will work? :mike:
really? thats interesting so the 700$ clutch nismo LSD would bolt right in :headbang:
ive just finished my suspention and after i do all my bushings its LSD time so i will really have to research it.
but that good news if it true
It is true. My Quaife lsd was advertised as being for 10mm or 12mm ring gears and the applications listed were 280ZX, Z31 300ZX, 240SX, and Z32 300ZX. They always leave out the 200SX. LOL
