okay...I dont' think I'll be able to do the ca18det...
but i can prolly do a ca18et swap. but how much will everything I need for the swap cost me?
and WHAT will I need for this swap?
what I'm planning to do is buy a full swap, and not insure my car until it's done...hopefully no longer than a year.
getting parts for it wouldn't really be hard then cause I could just go to like lordco or whatever and get parts I needed so I think this would be a good reason to do the ca18et swap instead of the det swap.
OR....
should I try to tackle the ca20et conversion? how hard is that? I know I'd need basically a ca18et motor but yea...that's also an option.
my end goal is 250rwhp...I knwo if I intercool it...get a bigger turbo, run more boost, bore it out, get the cam done and get forged rods and pistons and whatever and also of course upgrade the fuel system I can get to my goal.
neways...what do you guys think?
ca18et swapped into a ca20e?
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Jul 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
sounds good either way. The hardest part of the CA20ET conversion was the electrical. If you guys dont know, I probally own the only notchback turbo in the US also. I dont think any of the notches came turbo in the US.
I had to swap the electrical from head to toe on that notch. Kinda gay. BUt its worth it to me :lick:
what do you mean you had to swap it from head to toe?
if it's really that bad I may have to pay somebody to do the electrical work...which will be a bitch....$80 an hour for an electrical technician usually....shit
iono..what are the advantages of having a ca20et over a ca18et..other than the obvious .2L...
and I would still ahve the ca20e parts that I could put on...(so I can copy travis' work..bahaha)
ca20E intake manifold, stiffer valve springs....i think, the obvious .2L, and I really do think it makes a difference. i think the notches weigh slightly less, not much else.
I had to re-wier the car from the taillights, to the headlights and everyhting in between. Remember those horrible pictures of the dash all taken apart and all those horrible days.:beer:drink to forget them heh j/p
lol in that case...I may just swap in the ca18et and maybe use the ca20e head ahha
sounds good.

You would still need to swap out all your CA20E wiring and put a CA18ET harness in and a CA18ET ECU.
hmmm....
I'm not even sure I could do the swap myself...I want to try...but I woudlnt' know where to start..ahhaha...
ps...did you talk to your buddy travis?
A lot of it depends on the amount of time you are taking to do the swap, and if you do it in order both taking it apart, and putting it back together, you will find it easier...It also makes it easier if the engine going in was running before you stole it from the previous engine bay...8)

or a certain somebody is waiting to put it in his engine bay*cough*..travis I'm comin to steal your engine...*cough* ahhaha
I'm still trying to decide what I'll do....aiya...it all depends on how much $$ I have
hey my friend just gave me his 200sx tubo and i am planning on putting a sr20det in it and wanted to know if ne one has done this or if it is even a good idea?

Is a nose to tail rewiring required to swap in any engine?
Is a nose to tail rewiring required to swap in any engine?
not if it's the same engine..lol
not if it's the same engine..lol
haha yeah ok, well what about ca20e --> ca18et , ca18det, sr20det, vg30e, etc
i had to do it cause of a mismatch of some electrical wires. I think POST 86 model CA20E's have everything needed for a CA18ET swap from the EFI harness. This includes the wire that goes from the ECU to the fuel injctors. Cause the post 86 CA20's had CAS dizzy's and non-tootsie roll style coil packs. Dont quote me oon that one, im just going by little snipits i have heard over time. and looking at ones in the junkyard. It all depends on these connections right here. Its not the one im holding, its the one above it with 6 wires going into it. It needs to match up with the main wiring harness.

dammit... so for my 84 to get another engine swapped in, i'd have to do some major wiring work..
So no cut & splice because pre-86 models are missing some wires?
bummer
like I said, dont quote me, but I have heard of some rare exceptions for certain engine swaps. Who knows. Some cars came with xtra "goodies" and some didnt.
If you pull the engine yourself (or can tell the pullers to do this)
Leave everything connected you can. Remove any wiring you have to as an entire assmebly, and mark on the motor and the wiring with some tape and a pen where it came from, where it goes ... etc.
The more complete swap you do for the wiring, the easier it will be.
It's not as bad as you probably think. It can be very time consuming, but if you do a complete engine and wiring swap, it will be plug and play.
Alex ran into as many problems as he did from trying to combine ca18et and ca20e bits. The wiring setups are different, so he had the fun task of figuring it all out.
If you're just installing a motor, ECU and wiring harness, it won't be hard, as long as you remember where everything went.
but it was damn well worth it :lick:
take your time, and do it right, it might cost a little more in both time and $$, but it IS worth it, trust me.
last nite my dad and I went to go see a 200sx turbo...damn...that was a disappointment.
I was told over the fone that there was damage behind the driver's door and on the passenger's door...I thot it wouldn't be THAT bad...
I saw the car...ALL the panels and doors had major damage and rust...that would've been "okay" if the motor and tranny was mint....
not a chance in hell...the motor barely started up and barely kept idle.....drove it around...and damn...the thing shifted like crap...although the previous owner did do the short shift mod which felt really nice...but yea...the car wasn't worth the $400...
BUT yea...onto the point...on the way back..my dad and I had a good conversation about the car(mine)....and he gave me what he thot...have a car that's cheap on insurance for a few years to build up my insurance rating...then when it's better, dump the s12 and get myself a new/newer high performance car and actually be able to insure it...the key point in his theory tho was to keep the S12 stock and not sink my $$ into modifications...
and it got to me...and I'm really seriously considering returning the car completely back to stock(except my audio of course..heh)...and then just selling it later...
so I probably won't be doing a motor swap...but we'll have to wait and see what's going on..*sigh*
Your dad makes a good point indy. If I had to do this all over agian I would have waited a few more years before starting this. But hey, now it's almost in there... :headbang:
okay...so i'm gonna get an 87 200SX with a ca20e...how much would it cost to swap in either an sr20det, or a ca18et? i've got a friend who has a few sr20's so i might be able to get one cheap...but i just wanna find out how much and how possible it is...and also is it hard...thanks
