A guy I know has a 5-speed SE with a bad ECU and just picked up an early '87 (6/86 production date) automatic SE with no engine compression for free. Can he use the ECU out of the automatic car in the manual car?

Actually, yes, it should work just fine. You can use an auto ecu in a 5-speed car, but you can't use a 5-speed ecu in an auto.
