okay...my amp overheated the other day(stupid ****ing sun) and it's only running at 250rms@4ohm mono to two 12" subs rated at 250rms....geeze.....ehhe
okay, origninally I was going to wire up my fans like this...
http://www.sfu.ca/~tyee/misc/wiring.jpg (this is an illuminated switch I got from work so there are FOUR terminals...was a bitch to figure out how to wire up but I got it..gotta jumper one to another one and then one to power, one to ground and then another one going out...damn complicated switch)
but then I read some threads on a local car forum and found out that connecting it like that to just the remote wire will **** up my head unit...don't wanna do that to my precious precious alpine(yes boys...I upgraded to a nice alpine cda-9835 from my crappy panasonic on sunday)!!! haha.
oookay...so now I know I have to use a relay for this...my dad totaled his bmw and we took out a buncha stuff and I was like "hey lets take this out" and he asked what it was and I had no idea...but now looking at pictures I realize it's a relay... http://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/relay_2A.jpg (iso relay on the left) and was wondering if this would work?
okay, next, after reading that 1st thread I found out how to wire up the relay and fans and stuff.
"Hook 85 to the remtoe wire.
Hook 86 to ground.
Hook 87 to +12v constant.
Hook 30 to fans' + wire."
and was wondering if this woudl be the same for a Super ISO relay just in case that's the type I have instead of just an ISO relay. (super ISO relay has no pin 87a, but it's not used in the iso relay neways...so iono)
okay...so after looking at those and what not...this is how I'm planning to do the wiring now...
http://www.sfu.ca/~tyee/misc/wiring2.jpg is this right or am I still missing something. (is the fuse supposed to be between the relay and power? or is it fine where it is?)
I'm planning on running two 4" computer fans. I'll be building an enclosure for the amp and have it in 1 of 6 configurations... *note: the amp is mounted vertically and the "front" will be the largest panel on the case(or the top if it were mounted horizontally)
1) both fans on top, both blowing air in, with an "exhaust port" either on the front or bottom
2) both fans on top, both sucking air out
3) both fans on top, one blowing in, one blowing out
4) one fan on either side of the enclosure with one blowing air in and one blowing air out
5) have the fans on adjacent walls of the enclosure blowing air in(this would theoretically make a whirlwind effect would it not? lol...iono..I just realized that now when I typed it) and having an "exhaust port" on the front
6) Have one on front and one on one side(probably the bottom) and have them blow air in and have an "exhaust port" in the top
any other designs are welcome too.
if you're wondering why I have a switch there...it's because in the wintertime I really won't need to cool the amp...it'll get more than enough hehe...but the thing is, the switch, like I said, is illuminated. off = amber, on = red. so if I hook it up to the power supply "directly" through the relay..when the car is off..the switch will still be illuminated(or is that what the relay will do...keep it all off until the amp gets power?)...how much power do you think it'll draw? not much right? my blinking LED for my alarm uses up more power than that bulb right? that's the thing I'm most concerned about, the power drain. I wanted the illumination to only come on when the car was in ignition spot 2, 3 and start(off being ignition spot 1).
oh...and you may think that my with my setup I dont' need cooling...well...I've overheated before and I was on the highway with windows down...the seat was up but I would think there would be sufficient air going through the privacy cover and split in the seats..but I guess not..heh. and driving around and parking with my seat down isn't very safe ya know? and also...I need a project for when my "work term" is finished in a few weeks heh...
anyways...sorry for this insanely long post..heeh thanks in advance for any help.

computer fan cooling
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Aug 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
I ran into the same overheating problem in my car so i did the same type of thing with the enclosure for the amp but with two fans on the side of the enclosure blowing across the top and underneath my amp. Those computer fans pull very little amperage so i ran both of them straight through the switch (mines also illuminated) with no relay and they worked just fine for the better part of a year and a half, and it never overheated again either. You could also run tpower straight from you accesory wire (same one the deck uses) back to the fans that way they only turn on when needed, i succesfully ran that setup in my car for a couple months after i got tired of forgetting to turn my fans on. Hope that helps.
Its best to use the fan in the same push or pull configuration they were in. There are bearing load issues that enter in when it comes to design time. Then again, if the fan dies in 2 years, its probably not a big deal to replace it.
