Anyone ever replace their steering rack bushings on a 4 cyliner S12? I'm asking because I have some new ones I ordered through a local Nissan dealer and they are having trouble figuring out which ones are the right ones and are ordering more to make sure. I know the left side is right as it is just a round bushing. The right one however is different. Is that one supposed to be just one piece or two? So far I only have one piece for the right side and I got under the car to look and I can't tell if there is 1 piece or 2. I'm thinking there should be 2 pieces for the right side. Also the round bushing for the left side is a 1 piece unit and it doesn't look like I would be able to put it on my new rebuilt rack unless i cut it so i can open it up to fit on the rack. Would this be a problem do you think? I'm thinking that Nissan normally puts that bushing on when the rack is being rebuilt but I purchased a rebulit rack from Napa and it didn't come with bushings. So should I just put a cut in that one to get it on there? Any ideas on any of this please help. Thanks

steering rack bushings

I can't really comment on the 4 cylinder, but on my V6, the input side had a 2 piece, teardrop shaped bushing. The other side was round. You can just slit the bushing you got through Nissan. It won't make a difference since once you bolt it all down it's under compression anyway.
Yeah i recall that the passenger side was a round solid rubber and the drivers side was a 2 piece teardrop shaped one.
Be advised that the aftermarket rack might be smaller in diameter than the orignal. This was a problem I had and because of this the rack was no secured in the passenger side mounting. This kept me from getting the car alligned because of eccessive movement of the rack. If you still have both racks make sure the outside diameter of both tubes is the same where the rubber bushing sits.
My aftermarket rack is 2mm smaller in diameter than the orignal. I am using some sheet metal wrapped around the tube for now so the rack won't move around on me untill I can get a more permanent solution.
When I got my remanufactured rack it didn't come with the new bushings either....I just used the old ones, and they were both 2 pieces....one tear drop, and the other one round.....but both 2 pieces.
So the solid round rubber bushing I have should be 2 pieces as well Keith? Thanks everyone for the help.
I don't know for sure.....but that's how they were on my '84 ca18 when I unbolted the old rack......but it makes sense though......how else would you get the bushings on the rack if they weren't in 2 pieces? There should also be metal pieces in the same shape as the bushings that the bushings sit in, then you bolt the whole thing down with 2 bolts on each side.
