K - mounting speakers on the outside of the doors is my plan - any tips?

im thinking of mounting them right onto the plastic of the door, rather than building a bracket, good idea?

please, anyone with experience, or who has done it an can show me pics come forward, because the stock speakers have no depth and arent worth replacing with same depth ones.

edit: also what size speaks are in our cars? this site says 6 3/4" all around for the notch, and 6 3/4" door's for the hatch with 6 1/2" rears... is this true?

The notchback comes stock with 5.25s all around ... I haven't tried to fit a larger speaker in, but it is possible ...

I just removed the plastic bracket and drilled my holes into that rather than into my doors ... I can't get pics for you, though, because my car is at my parent's house ...

I got 6.5s in my doors, and they bolted right up in the stock locations.

what brand keith? because i've heard most speakers are too deep for the stock locations.

Oops...........disregard my last post!! I just pulled my receipt for the door speakers, and they are 5 1/4's. My bad.....I was thinking of my Maxima which has 6 1/2's in the front doors. I installed both pairs about the same time a few years ago.

so you just replaced stockers, did you replace tweeters (or did the hatch even come with them?) ? and did you notice a substantial increase in sound quality? im just running a head unit but if i go past half volume i get the farts. 50w/spk too much eh...

You'll never see 50 watts out of a head unit ;)

Well, there's that class D Panasonic out that may or may not be able to produce 50 watts, but no one has benchtested it and I have my doubts ...

Anyways, the point is, you're looking at 27 watts tops before the internal amplifier itself starts producing audible amounts of distortion but probably less than 20 :p

Also, if you're using the stock speakers, they're 20 years old and were rated @ 8 RMS ... ;)

There's no way anyone's stock speakers are still any good....the foam on mine were dry rotted 10 years ago!!
Yeah, my front ones are the stock size....Pioneer 3 ways, and no speakers in the rear stock locations in the hatch. Got a custom, carpetd box made years ago that fits the curves of the hatch like a glove, and fire the speakers up at an angle towards the glass....and a Blaupunkt head unit thats a couple of years old, along with a 250 watt amp.

Got some rockford fosgates back there just tonight, holy wow there awesome! waaay the **** different, i still cant quite reach the top of the volume without distortion but i think that's the head unit's fault.

anyways as for 5.25's in the back of the notch - dead wrong. i bought a set and they were well too small. i dunno what these ugly clarion buggers i got next to me are actually sized at, but i'm guessing 6. instead of getting the right size, i built some cool mounting plates, so all is good. damn they're sexy sounding, i put the stock speaker covers on so i dont get jacked but it does seem quite the shame. next on the agenda - fronts :(. i'll make sure to get the right size this time though, lol.

99% of head units on the market will not be able to go to full volume w/o distortion ...

For example, Alpines typically distort at 24-25 of 35 (depending on settings).

on the old speaks i could get to about 22/33 w/o distortion. on the new speakers i can get to 25/35 even 27/33 without distortion, and the whole way up the songs are a shit load clearer. clarion head unit btw.

i just wanna stand up for the stock speakers in my 85 gazelle. They sound awsome and still pump hard. I have had a set of Pioneer 5inch speakers sitting in my room for 14months waiting for the stockers to die, but they just keep on going! I think its cause i use my sub for all the bass, and the stockers are midrange and above. I must have a freak pair of speakers!

Actually I'm stepping up for the stock speakers too....

My front ones wern't flash cause they where too dusty...but the rear stockies pounded almost better than some cheap ass 6x9's i've heard!

i was gonna deliver the same blow to sheppo, jmac. heh. the 25/33 is true for almost all songs, the 27/33 is only true for the odd song with low bass. trust me, you wouldnt note any distortion either.

edit: by low bass, i mean not much bass, not extremely low bass - which would i would assume cause distortion.

you people are crazy...

on my alpine I can't go past 18 before it's TOO LOUD for me..

but then again on my panasonic I went to like 26 and had no problem..so I guess how much volume your head unit pumps out makes a difference too.

Do you have any idea of how many people tell me their system has distortion when it has so much that it gives me a head ache ? ;)

And 18 volume w/ the V-Drive is going to kill those stock speakers quickly ;)
