How do you get those darned things off? :(

Also, my shifter boot is all ripped up, I'm gonna go see if lordco has replacement parts (crosses fingers).

You need a "snap ring" plier available at Crap Tire, Lorco, and other auto tools places. If you need tools check out Midland Liquidation on Kingsway just west of Victoria Drive (north Side). Sometimes they have whole bunch of car stuff there too. As for the boot all I can say is good luck.

Would it be okay running without the boot? Or a torn up boot? Seems like a lot of grease and dirt that's gonna fling around in that area. Anybody else have encountered a torn boot problem?

I thought the flip bushing trick was only for the earlier transmission. I did it on mine and my shifter looks nothing like that.

really? Never really said that on my searches...

Can anybody confirm? I still need a shifter boot though.

only works on the early models with the 71B trans. If you have an 88 model you have a 71C and this mod doesn't work on that. But be happy the 71C feels much better to shift than the 71B in my opinion and i've had cars with both.

plus, the C trannys use the 240 linkage. Just scrap all that crap and buy yourself a short shift kit off ebay.

youthanasiadate not saved · #8

240? As in 240sx? Or 240Z?

240sx short shifter will work in the 71C trans.

So something like the B&M unit would work? The one that even replaces the shifter plate too?

Use some needle-nose pliers. and squeeze it closed and lift. It'll start to come out on the one side and it will just pop out. Getting it back in is a pain. I put in the stock shifter from a 240 and it shortend the throw a bit and it no longer wobbles around. Best thing about the swap is it was $10 for the shifter.

Well, after looking around on the net, it seems that I can't use the B&M shifter because it replaces the shifter plate as well, the bolts won't line up. But I can use something like the OBX shifter, but that still don't solve my inner shifter boot problem. It doesn't come with the kit...

off to the dealer then....

Okay, I basically got an S13 stock shifter... oi, does that ever feel nicer. Now I don't feel like I drive a truck anymore!! :D

hahaha, got it from gaelen? he's a cool guy heh.

youthanasiadate not saved · #15

Yep! you know him?

He was cool... met with him briefly when I picked up the shifter. Didn't get a chance to talk to him though since it was raining and we were at a parking lot.

Indecisivedate not saved · #16

don't know him well.

but if you go out to VDS and NWN events he's usually there.

..ripped boot..HAD one..didnt notice any difference over the NEW boot..it was like $6 at the local nissan dealer...and those rings...yeah...needlenose pliers are your friend..and if you can believe it, its harder putting them back in...!
