there aint nothin wrong with the NA fj :) once i find a good parts source (probably through nissan) i will start building her up.
I have a couple of cantacts for FJ parts i can pass onto you guys,
There is a na FJ20 in the UK thats is used fro racing and it's pushing out around the 200bhp mark
FJ20E vs FJ20ET
What are the real differences between the FJ20E and the ET?
I might have a line on some dusty old reman FJs for cheap, but they\'re the NA ones.
it depends on the year of manufacture and country it seems.
but generally, the main differences are...
different cam specs (duration only i think)
exhaust valves are sodium filled valves on a turbo
the cam cover is taller on the turbo
oil pump is 2mm wider on a turbo
turbo rods are a LOT bigger
pistons are higher compression on the na motor
flywheel only accepts a 9 inch clutch (9.5 inch on the turbo)
na flywheel is a lot lighter
exhaust studs are 10mm na and 12mm turbo
injectors are 2??cc on na and 375cc on a turbo
there is no oil return or feed for the turbo on the na block
but other than that they are identical!
you probably could turbo an NA fj20, but with the rods size, i dont think anything more than moderate boost could be considered even with decompressed pistons. the lower volume oil pump could be a hassle too.
having said all that, my NA fj20 has a turbo block, cam cover, oil pump, exh. studs as factory! but that is because its a NZ new spec s12. no emmissions, and fuel only efi (mech. ignition), no oxy sensor, no cat or any thing else along those lines.
I wouldn\'t dream of turboing it without a serious bottom end upgrade.
There\'s a lot of aftermarket FJ parts, it\'s just you\'re kind of screwed if you don\'t have an FJ to begin with *lol*
So, I guess I need to find out what the USDM FJ20E came with specifically.
Then again, aren\'t the NA FJs supposed to be pretty strong and and respond well to tuning?
The reason I ask is I\'ve been told by my parts guy that he can get a complete FJ20e rebuildable core for about $200.
There aren\'t many of them, but he said they were likely cores from an exchange years ago that were never remanned.
When demand dropped, they never bothered. But he says he can get all USDM parts for it to rebuild it. Just wondering if it would be worthwhile to get the motor.
I\'m not stuck on going turbo either. If it can make 200hp NA, it will be more than worth it in my mind.
Finding a bellhousing/tranny could be shitty though.
there aint nothin wrong with the NA fj Smiley once i find a good parts source (probably through nissan) i will start building her up.
I wasn\'t aware that the FJ was ever imported to the U.S.? So how can they have USDM parts for it?
i dont know if they were imported or not.
but i do know that europe got some LHD fj s12\'s.
yeah they did cause i have one of them Smiley
Mr.200I wouldn't dream of turboing it without a serious bottom end upgrade.
Well I have disproved this...
I am currently testing the NA to its stock limits at the moment. I have turbocharged a stock NA FJ20E running a GT30R, big cooler, blah blah. Anyway, it handles 19psi with no pinging or bottom end problems. The NA is not much different to the turbo. There is definately differences in valve timing and this needs to be changed to make good HP. I am changing over to turbo valve timing and hopefully this will give me the power I want. Its only making 265rwhp (dyno = 10% low) at the moment on 17psi so this should change with the turbo timing. Go to FJ20.com where you will see my post on the differences in timing. To cut it short, the turbo timing is 7 degrees retarded which is a lot.

so heres another questions is the fj24e just a fj20det thats been bored, new crank, rods, pistons, and machine work done to the block to accept the cranks or are the blaock different
bartc_jso heres another questions is the fj24e just a fj20det thats been bored, new crank, rods, pistons, and machine work done to the block to accept the cranks or are the blaock differentEveryone wishes. The FJ24 has a different block. :(

Actually, from what I hear the fj24 was a motor that was used in rally and never used in a production car. Nismo made a few fj20 to fj24 stroker kits though.
the fj24 is a completely different beast really. the fj24 has bigger mains, so if you overbore the main journals on a fj20e to fit a fj24 crank, you weaken them a fair bit.the crank, rods and pistons are all different. if i remember right i think its about 3mm larger on the pistons, and 8 mm longer stroke...correct me if im wrong someone!
even the cylinder head casting is a different one. they run external dry sumping rather than the internal oil pump too.

Yes, confirming too.
As far as I know FJ 24 has the same block with FJ 20 E or ET. The crank and the pistons are different.
fj20.com should confirm this too. Once there was Nismo made stroker kits,
to convert fj20's to fj24, but not left over any original kits.
I'm told that 4 cyl. pathfinder cranks fit too but I'm not shure if they can handle such high rpm or turbo stress.

sundayssorrowgtryeah they did cause i have one of them :)
wait wait.... you have a FJ20E in the U.S. did you import the engine???? or did you buy it like that i thought they werent sold here
:wtf:
yeah they did cause i have one of them Smiley

WTF?
As I said before I was investigating the strength of the stock FJ20E. I simply turbocharged one and using 19 psi I made today 307rwhp. The engine is a totally stock FJ20E apart from turbo cam gears (which add only 15.4rwhp) and I am not sure whether it runs 9.1:1 or 9.5:1, chances are the former. Please go to FJ20.com to see my dyno run.
FJ20E\'s like FJ20ET\'s are bulletproof providing you tune them right.
EightySix200SXwait wait.... you have a FJ20E in the U.S. did you import the engine???? or did you buy it like that i thought they werent sold here
:wtf:
it came over from europe. i am not sure where though. either france or germany because it is left hand drive. i picked it up from one of my dads friends, the car has had several owners.starting in canada. so i am guessing that whoever had it in canada brought it over.they werent ever sent to the states.

nice man truly nice!
I\'ve toyed with one of my na FJ\'s while i was rebuilding my FJet. the na\'s have things to look out for though S12 na has no castings for oil lines at all.
the DR30 version has raised castings to drill and tap for oil supply and drain. the S12 block can still be done you would have to drain back through a pipe welded to the side of the sump and drill a hole in the oil gallery (a raised section from filter to back of block). Even though trying to destroy it. It would not die. the na is a great engine and keeps nice thottle responce when turboed. high comp with low boost makes power down low (launch). but low comp with high boost makes the power up high
i have a nz new s12 fj20e, and it does have all of the bits yours doesnt apparently. all the castings are there, just not drilled.
it also has the turbo front cover and oil pump, and the turbo m10 exh. studs and all.
alright, trying to revive the tread
So i have been doing some researching on this topic..
Vg30_s12 from inhere, told me he had taken both type of engines apart.. (you are more than welcome to compare more parts mate, so we know for sure)
The rods should be the same size according to him. others say the turbo rods are a bit more thicker and 8mm shorter.. others again, just that the turbo rods are thicker.. So ill put them under might be same "box" cause people says differnt things.
Might be the same:
Rods
What i know of differences is:
compression. Turbo ?- 8.5 -? ---- N/A 9.1 - 9.5 (depending on japanese/EU/US versions.)
Fuel injectors -NA 275cc turbo 350ish cc
flywheel - turbo heavier and acommadates bigger p/plate
clutch -9" NA 9.5" turbo
gearbox - wider gears in a turbo box
exhaust manifold (guess why )
oilpump and frontcover
wiring loom - only the air temp sensor wire is on the the turbo loom, not the NA from what ive found
Crankshaft - Turbo version got larger oilholes
exhaust studs (turbo is 10mm, N/A is 8mm)
ECU
Airflow meter
What i know is the same:
block
sumps
head - some (but not all) NA motors had a different rear breather vent on them and turbos have a taller rocker cover (also might depend on production year. N/A with same tall rocker cover is in my possesion).
-the bore and stroke for both motors is the same, the CR comes from different pistons.
Dont know: (confirmation and solid facts are needed for these parts)
Pistons - should be different (can someone confirm this as a solid fact?)
valves - have been told that turbos have the sodium filled exh valves, but maybe an urban myth?
cams - i believe that cams are the same too, the timing is different between the 2 due to cam gears being changed.
inlet manifold - other than the relief on the turbos(and the word turbo cast into them), they are generally identical, although there are different castings of each type.
Depending on production year
holes in the block for turbo oil tubes
Found this info on the dizzy aswell:
Turbo FJ dizzy = optical
Early NA FJ dizzy = magnetic
Late model NA FJ dizzy is optical
Also, theres 5 different dizzys for the fj engines
This is info found on Auss12.com, fj20.com, Club-s12.com. Many people has alot of knowledge. So if u got solid facts, please post it for us to know
ECU's and AFM's are different.
Might be the same:
Rods
- all the turbo's ive had in bits are larger rods, never checked pin length though...
What i know of differences is:
compression. Turbo 8.5 ---- N/A 9.1 - 9.5 (depending on japanese/EU/US versions.)
-turbo's also came in a different comp. ratio on the factory intercooled version of dr30
Fuel injectors -NA 275cc turbo 350ish cc
flywheel - turbo heavier and acommadates bigger p/plate
clutch -9" NA 9.5" turbo
gearbox - wider gears in a turbo box
exhaust manifold (guess why ) -lol
oilpump
-oil pump and front cover are different.
wiring loom
- only the air temp sensor wire is on the the turbo loom, not the NA from what ive found.
Crankshaft
-? i believe that they are the same???
exhaust studs (turbo is 10mm, N/A is 8mm)
What i know is the same:
block
- not always. some na blocks have the blanks cast into them for the oil feed/return for the turbo and others dont.
sumps
Dont know:
Pistons
-the bore and stroke for both motors is the same, the CR comes from different pistons.
valves
- have been told that turbos have the sodium filled exh valves, but maybe an urban myth?

head
- some (but not all) NA motors had a different rear breather vent on them and turbos have a taller rocker cover.
ECU
- definately different
Airflow meter
- definately different
Depending on production year
holes in the block for turbo oil tubes - late NA motors had this, left over specials...
Found this info on the dizzy aswell:
Turbo FJ dizzy = optical
Early NA FJ dizzy = magnetic - even late ones used this too in the s12
Late model NA FJ dizzy is optical

No, the crankshaft has larger oilholes on the turbo..
And the rocker cover, well i have an older type engine N/A this also have the high rise rocker cover.. newer type N/A is low.. Again, i think it depends on engine age..
When i say the block is same, i meen the cast! Some missing holes doesent matter, they can be drilled.
Edit: ill just update the list on page 1 with the solid facts we got..
