I got some stock castor rods machined down 20mm so that i could set my castor with shims (washers) and see what kind of difference it makes. I'm looking for a faster return to centre rate on my steering, also it should help my tyres contract patch during cornering. I ended up setting my rods 14mm shorter than stock (2.5 degrees or so i figure but i'll find out for sure later).
I forgot to take pics of the rods while they were out of the car (do'h) but here is the car sitting on the ground after i was done.

The wheel sits further forward as a result of the extra castor but it only scrubs on the soft inner guards and clears all the metal so i'm happy. This is with the much wider and more offset 16x7s i'm running to so i'm happy :)

Have u tested this on the road yet? How did it go?

Only driven it for about 15 minutes but it's return to centre seems to be a little quicker, and it feels a little more direct overall. Also the point where the outside front wheel feels like it's got the most grip occurs at a lower speed (you had to go faster before to get the tyre to sit flat on the cambered outer tyre and really grip)
We'll see how it goes when i get new front tyres this weekend and a wheel alignment.

I did sunthing like that with mine. I love how it handels. great drifting upgrade.

so what exactly is the trick? you've peaked my interest, I may be able to do this.

After having driven with this mod for a week it's a must have for drift, and definitely a good idea for spirited driving in general i think.
Now i didn't take any photos (do'h) but basically take the castor rods out of the car (take you about 5 minutes). Now if you remove the bush at the front end (just slides off) you'll see that it rests against a step in the shaft. I had 20mm machined off this step so that the bush could slide that extra 20mm down the shaft. This 20mm wasn't so much the ammount of castor i wanted but gives me room to shim the bush up and down the shaft, i ended up with the bush shimmed at 14mm further down the shaft than stock, this is as far as it'll go easily (and without scrubbing on any metal). It only scrubs on the plastic inner guards on my car with my 205x55x16s on 7" rims at near full lock, which doesn't worry me at all, after a while the thin plastic will rub away and no more scrub noise hehe.

Im now doing a project with a set of independantly adjustable camber/caster plates. If things goe how i would like them too.

The only thing we will have to do is screw 3 holes on top of our strut tower.I'll get back to you guys and let you know how it goes. ::fingers crossed:: :)

Btw, how much positive caster did you get out of it neb?

About 2.5 degrees extra by my rough calcs, i can tell you how much exactly when i get an allignment next week. I think stock the S12 runs a little less than 4 degrees castor.

That's about how my S12 looks now with its Z31 front suspension shaft... I think the spindle sits foward more than on the S12 shaft, so my S12 looks rather similar to that now... I REALLY need to take some pictures... sheesh

Pavementdate not saved · #10

yes the Z31 had quite a bit more caster

I'm looking at using R31 castor rods now cos i'm changing the suspension arms for S13 items (my S12 ball joints are on the way out and the S13 ones in my shed are fine, they are also around 5mm longer than the S12 ones). I'll be doing the same mods to the R31 ones if they are suitable.
