Hello. I have a 1985 200sx 1.8L turbo. I'm having problems retrieving diagnotic codes from the ecu. I turn the key on [car not running, but warm] and turn the screw clockwise to recieve the flashes for mode 111 [self diagnostic mode]. At this point the ecu doesn't flash the lights to indicate the different modes, but indicates code 23 and 31.
Is my ecu fried as indicated by 3 red, 1 green flashes, code 31[ the car has no AC]? How can I confirm that this is the correct ecu for my car as I have corrected some strange thing on the car?
The problem with the car is, it has an irratic idle when warm. Also when accelerating the engine hesitates and will not pull cleanly in 1st gear untill 3200rpms and then gets worse as I gear up.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Problem with ecu

hmm get the # off the ecu and get your vin 3 and call the dealer they can tell ya if its the proper ecu. also it almost sounds like a bad temp sensor
11 Crank angle sensor
12 Air flow meter
13 Water temp sensor
14 Car idle sensor
21 Ignition signal
22 Fuel Pump
23 Idle Switch
24 Overdrive switch (Autos only)
31 Air Con (Or no fault on cars without Air con)
32 Start Signal
34 Detonation Sensor
44 No Fault
23 is the idle switch or what we'd call a TPS - Throttle Positioning Sensor
Would totally cause your problems.
Hello, I did replace the TPS approx 6 months ago, after reading the code at that time. That did not solve the problem. This is an ongoing problem that is getting worse. So I am wondering, are the two codes related to each other? If so what part of the a/c system is installed in a non a/c car?
Thanks.
The reason the TPS code comes up is because it's part of a diagnostic procedure. You need to push the gas pedal down and release it and the code should then go away. And the code 31 means there are no problems (at least that the ECU can detect assuming you don't have A/C)
