The ball joint at the connection between the shock tower and the lower control arm is shot on both sides of my S12... what's the easiest / cheapest (more important) way to replace these? Just buy new ball joints and pop them in? Or what?? Cuz my fronts are SHOT along with my outer tie rods on this puppy... makes the car shift and wiggle under acceleration / braking with required correction in the steering wheel... =(
Thanks,

Shot ball joints... best way to replace?
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Sep 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
If you do these yourself make shure you know someone with a press and take out the whole control arm and take it to them.. if not youre lookin at a day per side job... they are a pita to get out just trying to heat em and pull em out... (trust me this is how i had to do mine after 100,000 miles and all those years of winters in ohio...)
Nissan calls for new lower control arms when you do this. That's why I ended up buying new ones cause I didn't have access to a press and couldn't get the ball joints to go in. Just was easier to replace the lower control arms. Although it certainly isn't cheaper.
KAZ i did mine when i switched to s13 suspension, all you need to do is pick up some balljoints from autzone or advanceauto, then rent a balljoint press from autozone, you get all your money back when you return it, anyways just hammer them out, then press the new ones in, id say its a 2 hour job, by the way nopi has balljoints for our cars on clearance right now for 18$ lol cant beat that
please check want to sell i have the ball joints you need and control arm bushings too.
thanks

Yeah, I noticed they rented the tools, and it didn't seem all too expensive... although not all too cheap either... I think it was like $99... that's a chunk to rent a tool... especially when you don't have a credit card to charge it to... lol. (got rid of all of mine by choice). I'll take it into consideration. Thanks!

Are they OEM Nissan? If not, where did you get them?
Thanks,
you know you get all your money back when you return the tools right? no there not OEM nissan, nissan only sells them in the control arm as you know, you have several choices, the ones nopi sells for 18$ each are federal/mougal or whatever, you can get beck/arnley at advance auto, thats what i did, they have grease fittings and are the best ones out i think, but there like 40$ each, or you can get duralast, autozones knockoff brand, for like 25$ each, being realistic, anyone will be fine cause your car is 20 years old, i dont think you will have it for another 20.... you know what i mean....
it just comes down to who you trust, and beck is one of the only companys ill use......
hope this helps, goodluck ;-)

You don't NEED the tool it just makes it much easier.. you can get them in rather easily if you heat the control arm and put the balljoints in the freezer for an hour or two... then just use a vice to slide them right in...

Guys, I rent tools all the time... I understand about needing them etc... I'm just whining about the $99 I have to drop temporarily to borrow it... it requires I HAVE the $99 in addition to the cost of the parts... which makes it all the more difficult... I understand how it all works... just whining about the process... =oP

No no, I didn't take it that way... just wanted you all to know I as just whining about it... thats all. ^_^ Just a pain to fork over the $99 for a few hours when you don't really have it in the first place... hopefully I'll be able to do it within the next few weeks!
Thanks
