its been a sweet weekend. my friend got a jdm intake and gave me his old AEM cold air intake off of his newer prelude. i took it and fabbed the hell out of it and came up with something sweet. this is the hot and sounds like a beast. check it out. the only thing that i need is a bypass valve.

tight...but being wher eit is, that thing will get dirty hella fast.

so clean/recharge it regularly. or make some sort of casing for it.

project200sxdate not saved · #3

i was wondering if you were gonna let us know what year prelude? and what all kinds of mods you had to do to it to get it to fit?

Keithdate not saved · #4

Looks sweet......nice job! Indecisive is right though....that thing will get dirty quick posistioned where you have it......and if you drive it in the rain you will get some water ingestion from water slinging off of the tire.
I had mine setup like this for a while with an open filter until the filter got water logged from sling off from the tire and it wouldn't rev past like 2500 rpm......and it was only sprinkling outside!!
Simple solution took care of the problem.....a shielded cone filter by Ractive, and extending, and angling the pipe so the filter is further towards the front of the car, and away from the tire. This took care of it and now I can drive in heavy down-pours with standing water with no water ingestion problems at all.......3 years running!!
Here's a few pics of mine.......

How are you guys relocating the air/idle thingy, not sure if u know what im talking about but the second i moved mine it wouldnt idle propery.

bartc_jdate not saved · #6

are you talking about the maf..

Indecisivedate not saved · #7

apparently if you move the MAF(ie change the distance from the intake mani) you have to adjust some screw on it or something?

bartc_jdate not saved · #8

then all you need to do is making the piping so that you keep the maf in the same spot

craigcddate not saved · #9

are you talking about the maf..

No its not the MAF there is Two hoses going into a valve with and adjustment screw. When i relocated mine it affected how my car ran. I ended up putting it back to stock.

bartc_jdate not saved · #10

when you moved it did you adjust the screw to make it idle better

Keithdate not saved · #11

hmmmmm.....my idle adjustment thing is still mounted in the factory location, but I've moved it around with the engine running with no change in idle.
Also, this moving around the maf issue... what problems are assosiated with doing this, and does this apply to the ca18et as well? I moved mine back about 5-6 inches closer to the turbo, and have no problems.

craigcddate not saved · #12

Ya i readjusted the the screw and it didnt help. I cut the hoses and reloacted them. No adjustment could make it run again i ended up going to the wreckers and returning it to stock.

his prelude is a 2000 or 2001. the new style. this is the intake before i got to it.

thanks!! where did you find the rubber connectors? can you get these at say.. auto zone?

Keithdate not saved · #15

Check your phone book under "Hose & fittings" or "Hose and Hydraulic" Most will have the blue silcone hose in 3" or whatever size you need.
Also www.atpturbo.com carries them in different colors, angles, and sizes.

sidewaysdate not saved · #16

i use gasoline filler hose for mine it is tough but rather expensive but all parts stores should have it

project200sxdate not saved · #17

cool thanks!!

Yah the first thing that I would be doing would be to put a shield on that intake pipe. 8)

Also I don't know how good it is for the CA20 MAF to lay vertical like you have it...

Philipn126date not saved · #19

i dont think that it matters how the maf is. as long as its hooked up right. i drove in the hurricane today and it did fine. no missing out at all. i probably will make some kind of shield so that is doesnt get dirty too fast.

Philipn126date not saved · #20

just for some extra security, i took a metal coffee can and cut it so that my air filter sits just right in it. i then mounted it to the pipe. i also painted it. doesnt look too bad for a home-made filter shield. ill get pics up when it is daylight.

You could probably use a plastic flower pot too

Did you use a paint can??

cls12vg30date not saved · #24

As Phil stated, it's a coffee can. All I can say is, Genius.
Did you cut the whole bottom out of the can? (The side at the end of the intake? If so, it might not be quite as effective as the shields that follow the shape of the filter at keeping crap out, but it's definitely an improvement. And it might even flow better. It will work fine for keeping junk from the wheel from hitting the filter from the side. I like it.

Completely missed that part...:|

Hey Keith out of interest does it look like much stuff hits the filter cover in that position? I ask cos i am mounting my oil cooler and remote filter mount (if i can't find another spot for the filter) there. The cooler will be mesh covered but the filter will just sorta be hanging there. I think it'll be ok but maybe i should make a cover for it or somthing, hmm.

Keithdate not saved · #27

Actually yes.....the shield gets pretty dirty from water sling-off from the tire........infact that whole area gets pretty wet depending on how fast your driving in wet weather......even the back side of the blinker light assembly that stick out of the back side of the bumper....just take a look down there after a drive in the rain and you'll see what I'm talking about.
The filter itself stays perfectly clean, and dry though.
You should be ok mounting your relocated oil filter there, I would just spray it off with water then dry before you unscrew it.....then clean the mating surface before installing the new filter.

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #28

Yeah cool, doesn't matter if it gets wet, as long as there isn't big arse stone chips or somthing down there hehe. I'll probably make a little shield anyways but it should be pretty safe.

sidewaysdate not saved · #29

mount your oil filter on your fender. make it super easy to get to. you will be glad you did when it takes you 30 secconds to change it.

200sxdriverdate not saved · #30

hey philipn126, what are the specs on fabbing for that intake you have, i was thinkin about getting one and i want to make sure i do it right. thanks.

/\shdate not saved · #31

also in most of your pics i have seen, your battery was moved i take it cause right where you put your downpipes is where my battery is.....it doesn't matter which side i put my intake on does it?>

Philipn126date not saved · #32

i gutted the old intake piping and relocated my battery to where the maf used to sit. my buddy gave me an intake off of his 02 prelude and i cut it up and used.

Alex Frostdate not saved · #33

Nope, it does not...

Philipn126date not saved · #34

yea, i guess that it doesnt matter what side the intake is on, but i just put it on the passenger side because it was a shorter distance to run that way.

Alex Frostdate not saved · #35

Same here...plus it opens up a lot of space around the coils...

Philipn126date not saved · #36

yea, but because i did move the battery to the drivers side, i had to relocate the coils to make room.

Alex Frostdate not saved · #37

I already had 4 gauge going from one end to the other, so it was really easy to relocate the battery...

/\shdate not saved · #38

can i still put my intake where the maf used to be then? i don 't want to move the battery..also, i have noticed some of you have them in your wheel well kinda or in the engine bay...how much better is it to put underneath, and if you do put it in the engine bay and use a heat sheild would it have the same effect?

Indecisivedate not saved · #39

yes, you can just have the MAF where it is and route piping down to where you want the filter.

no, the result will NOT be the same. heat shields absorb heat around it, but it can only do that to a certain point.

a proper CAI mounted in the bumper away from the engine bay is almost always exposed to cold air and has no real worries about warm air surrounding it.

but that being said, at highway speeds, if the SRI(short ram intake) has good flow where it is(say a scoop just above it, or a proper headlight intake hole), then the difference is negligible. in a traffic jam situation is where it would make a bigger difference...but in that situation, you're not really gonna need the extra power. and it's not gonna be that much anyways.

/\shdate not saved · #40

so any particular CAI better than the other??

Indecisivedate not saved · #41

wide and mandrel bent

I dont' know any cai's that are mandrel bent tho.

just needs to have good flow.
