I was looking through a Sport Compact Car, and I saw an S15 by Cockpit which had been de-turbo'd, stoked to 2.2 liters, and given quad throttle bodies. This seems like a cool mod, and while it may not give a ton of power, it would be fun, and would give me a completley unique S12. Just a thought, and any feedback would be welcome.

Philipn126date not saved · #2

sounds very sweet, but like a lot of work. how would you do the maf and piping? is there any electrical stuff to deal with? is there a benefit of hp or just for show? wowie this is interesting. i would like to see that article.

Indecisivedate not saved · #3

I'm a noob so anybody wanna tell me what this quad throttle body is?

or is it just 4 TBs connected to the intake mani.

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #4

If the 4 throttles feed from a plenum you can use a AFM just as the stock setup does, if it's NA it wouldn't have any piping (i presume u ment IC piping)
The RB26DETT has individual throttles (although 6 obviously). I would imagine they would have ram tubes though in this case.
Quad throttles is having one throttle for each cylinder, kinda like using twin sidedraught carbs on a 4 cylinder, one throat for each cylinder. Very short tracts to the cylinders etc. Also looks da bomb if it runs just ram tubes :D:D

SHEPPO3930date not saved · #5

quads give THE BEST induction noise eva! but you will need to solve the MAF problem as nobody would hide a set of quads in a plenum chamber, to then run a pipe to the MAF. So unless you are going for aftermarket management with a MAP sensor, forget about it. But you could go a set of twin side draght webbers, 45mm ones, that will have the induction roar, the lil ram tubes (trumpets) and the 4 racing sock filters on the end..........and did i mention with carbs you wont have a rev limmiter :-) Either way you go, GL with it and expect alot of work, but in the end you will have a truely unique CA20e!

project200sxdate not saved · #6

how would you mount the carbs on our motor though?

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #7

With a manifold same as with every other motor. Only time i have seen without a manifold was on things like on Ford Zephyr Raymond Mays Heads, they were designed for tripple solex carbs and they bolt straight to the head.

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #8

Yah, I'd be willing to deal with any wiring problems. I'd love to put the article up, but unless you can read Japenese (I know some of you may be able to), there's no info out there about that car. I saw it in a blip in SCC from the Tokyo Auto Salon. Quick question, I'm going to a pick a part, and was wondering what Radiator would fit with the least modification? Thanks!
I'll keep you posted on my quad tb research!

EDIT:I know that we can't bore our engines, but any thoughts on wether or not we could stroke them?

Joel07date not saved · #9

OK, only thing here is that individual throttle bodies are really only good for super high rpm. Granted, they look awesome, but they're more for racing and 5k+ rpms.

So, be ready to build up the bottom end. And then you run into a different problem which is the fact that the SOHC head we have is not exactly the best for high rpm operation. The small intake ports make it great for low end torque and lower rpms, but a DOHC head would be much more well suited to the high rpms.

And as far as stroking it, that causes even more problems for high rpm's. A small bore and long stroke is another great thing to do for low rpm's or turbo apps, but for a high winding motor, you want a big bore and short stroke.

But if that's what you want to do, then go for it! Weber makes some awesome sidedraft carbs, and you would probably have to get a custom intake made to go between them. It would definetly look awesome.

I just think it might be more well suited for a DOHC motor...

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #10

well, if I stroked it AND added quad tb's, then maybe they'd level each other out? I dunno... Couple more things, first, again, what radiator fits?!?! also, are carbs the same thing as quad throttle bodies?

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #11

I put 4 honda motorcycle carbs on my old 1980 toyota celica and I just made some mount flanges at work so they bolted straight to the head. Mind you the celica had much simpler mechanical ignition but you could easily rig something like that for a silvia. It took careful driving to get full power out of them (because they have no accelerator pump) but it added a lot of power. This was all done after the car had made it to bush buggy status and sadly it burned up on the side of a logging road so I have no pics but I can describe in detail the work done if wanted. Thanks.

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #12

Yeah, if you could detail it, that'd be awesome. Also, Carbs and TB's are different... also, I was thinking of finding parts in a junkyard, getting a spare intake manifold, and attaching the TB's outside of the car. Does any know of a U.S. spec car which had quad tb's stock, or is that an aftermarket thing only.

TuffS12date not saved · #13

quad tb's would give you some awesome responce make the engine very snappy the best way to do it would be with side draught webber style tb's and i beleave im not sure where i read it but somone does make a twin webber manifold for CA20's as it was used in bluebirds also

to make somthign like this run really well you will need to modify the ignition and fuel maps to take advantage of them but a better solution would be a aftermarket ecu

Joel07date not saved · #14

I realize that carbs and tb's are different... I just don't know of a whole lot of cars that used quad throttle body's and efi stock. I think there was a version of the SR20 that did. And no matter what, if you go with that type of intake setup, whether it's tb's or carbs, you're not gonna have a lot of bottom end. That's the point I was trying to make. It would look awesome though... :)

TuffS12date not saved · #15

you shouldnt loose any low down power if they are setup right
the only factory quad throttle SR20 was in the GTiR pulsar or Sunny where ever you live it was only available turbo tho

the 20V 4AGE i think is quad throttle and for a 1.6 they are fantastic motors
my engine tuner has a mech that works for him with a early corolla with a 4AGE and a mighty T28 hybrid turbo that makes 220rwkw on stock internals
damned impreasive engines

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #16

I'll look for an old Hachi-Roku, but the chances are slim. I'll probably find some on ebay.

ahoffman83date not saved · #17

Well only the 20 valve engine had the quad throttle bodies and it was only available in the japanese market as a FWD engine setup in a later model.

TuffS12date not saved · #18

that is correct to a certain degree
they were a fwd model but they were sold all over the world
we get them in aus as a 20v corolla

Joel07date not saved · #19

I'm pretty sure we didn't get em in the US...

We didn't get any good stuff here... :frown:

SHEPPO3930date not saved · #20

GTiR pulsar has indervidual throttle bodies, same as the GTR skyline, so they will do the job easily. quads are more of a benifit to a modified motor, putting them on a stock engine will only gain maybe 2-3hp MAX! the real gain is response and having a uber crisp throttle is what u want for citcuit and sprint racing. Ma mates AE86 has a 20V fitted, and it is THE best sounding engine in my books, and 2nd, it is THE most responsive mutha with the lightened flywheel, ballanced bottom end and high comp. I rekon a highly strung CA20e would be a nice thing to see, and in a couple of weeks i'll have a spare motor............ might be an idea.

driftdreamsdate not saved · #21

thank me later .. although i dont know how you would do this since we had mafs and not maps like hondas http://homemadeturbo.com/tech_projects/itb/index.html

iliRandyilidate not saved · #22

One and I think only way to solve the MAF problem is to go with a stand alone unit gets rid of the maf and ecu. 240 and Mustang guys are doing this.

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #23

Yah... i'll probably join a 510 site, or hachi roku site to get more info about this

metalmaniacdate not saved · #24

i was reading this thread and went looking a litt bit. i found this pic

http://www.piercemanifolds.com/Images/carpix/nissan1a.jpg

its not the greatest but you can see the weber carbs on the far side (the red things)

Joel07date not saved · #25

Man, is that in a stanza or something? Looks awesome except the motor's pointing the wrong way...

Mr.200date not saved · #26

Hmm ... well, the old 240s and 260s came with a pair of SU carbs ...

I think they'd look right at home

http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/Tools%20and%20Equipment/images/FZX3010.jpg

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #27

Yah... that looks good, except that I'm going for quad throttle bodies, not carbs. There was a guy in SCC who had a 510 with a turbo and quads, so I'm gonna try to get in touch with him for some info.

Once again my last junkyard visit got cancelled 'cause of rain, what radiator fits the closest?!?!

TuffS12date not saved · #28

just rmemeber your target when doing somthing like this
expense can easily outweigh the gains

when i did my turbo upgrade i gained 40kw @ the wheels for $500 that is a worthwild upgrade

a friend spent 2k on exhuast and it made a extra 13kw
that is not a worthwild upgrade

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #29

I'm keeping that in mind, and am planning to do the work myself and used parts. Doing some research... ebay's pretty slim... I'm thinking some for sale secions on various fourms are gonna be my best bet

RPSport-Johndate not saved · #30

ok, if you want to run sr20, individual throttle boddies, Naturaly aspirated, with no intake plenumb then The easiest answer here is to use the djetro version of the power fc. This version automatically gives you the option for using a MAP instead of a MAF, and the tunability range is enough to get the car to run as N/A.

Then it would just be a matter of hacking a set of GTI-R intake manifold to pieces.

It's really not that hard.

The question would be whether or not they used teh DIS or Distributor.

Please post some of the pics (if you still have them, or any) of the Celica setup you made please...8)

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #32

I have carbs similar (from an XR350) to the ones I used in the shop and another 1980 celica sitting in the back 40 (need any parts? haha) and I'll get some pics of both to try and show how I did it, Sadly the original celica burned to the ground out in the woods (long walk back that day) but I'll see if I can get pics of the carcass just for kicks.

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #33

alright, I've run into a few questions.
One, i am curious, do we need all of those vacum lines going into the intake piping?
Second, i was thinking abuot the MAF sensor, and was thinking about how I would hook it up. and I have a few Ideas. First, i was thinking maybe I could hotwire a set of sensors from the donar car(s), and just hotwire that straight into the engine harness. Second, I was thinking that maybe i may go with a cheap standalone system, or borrow a new ecu from another car and re-wire the car. These are only Ideas, and i am open to any suggestions and or comments.

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #34

Does your car have vacuum timing advance or electronic? If its vacuum take all those lines, your maf sensor, tps sensor, and all those little vacuum relays and throw them in the trash. If memory serves all that stuff was to control your fuel injection and if your going to quad carbs you wont need any of it. If your going quad throttle bodies then you will probably have to run new vacuum routes

TuffS12date not saved · #35

uglyoldnissan has a real good point
if your going to spend the money on quad throttle it is pretty pointless trying to make the stock injection setup work with it
as it may work it wont work well and you will be very dissapointed with the results for the money you spent the very best thing to do with a setup like this is aftermarket efi anything else and your jsut wasting your time

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #36

Well, I finally got pictures of the carbs I used on my celica (not the actual one but the same style and size) so here they are, there is only two of them but you get the picture
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_img_a/686759_14_full.jpg
These are twin 32mm mikune sidedraft carb off an 87 xr350 (Honda) but the ones I used were from a 86 xr500. The only difference between the 350 carbs and the 500's were the jets and tuning. Though you would want to see these.

Alex Frostdate not saved · #37

Thats awesome I've got four rack Mikuni VM33 mm off of a 1996 Yamaha VMax 4 800 cc snowmoblie...I am having some pretty cool ideas right now...

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #38

The only problem I could forsee is that you would have to use three of the vmax carbs. When I did my celica I had to use carbs from 4 XR500's, but that was easy because a 500cc dirtbike and a 2000cc car means 4 bike carbs will be perfect for the car. The vmax is an 800 (and two-stroke, they use a lot more fuel and mixed gas) so if there are two it will run 1600cc's and three will run 2400cc's. Be interesting to how to setup carbs of those size. BTW The XR500 only uses one of those carb blocks in the pics so in reality my celica had 4 carb blocks but 8 actual carbs

Oh as far as jetting that is not a problem, we race snowmobiles and we have lots of jets for them, plus that style carb was also used on all Yamaha's from the Phazer (500cc)up so I could easily setup them differently. as far as the mixed gas, the Yamaha's use oil injection, and we inject the oil into the reed cage co the oil never sees the carb, so that would not be a problem either...8) I think this might actually work...8)

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #40

If you want those carbs I've got you can have'em both for free(plus shipping and handling haha). When I bought the last ones I already had 2 and paid 100 bucks apiece for the other two so if you wanna go that route just let me know.

I tend to like flat slide carbs as opposed to round slide, but those look very appealing...

Where abouts do you live??

Uglyoldnissandate not saved · #42

The other side of the country, if you look at a map of B.C. I live right along the border in the middle of the province.
