Hello,
Im recently new to the Nissan scene after purchasing a Silvia ZX Turbo from Ebay,(of all places!)I was delighted to get the thing home and start work on it.When i first fired it up,there was white smoke everywhere.at first i thought it was just because the car had been sitting for a very long time and hadnt been started.and a load of crap had settled into the cylinders.at this point,i consulted a friend of mine who has great mechanical knowledge of cars and stated that it could be leaking coolant into the cylinders, however, the temp gauge never moves above normal, and there dosent appear to be any loss in fluid.a few weeks later,i decided to jump and give it a little running time.this time i noticed something strange.when i applied the gas pedal, the revs went up along this the boost pressure as normal.what i was surprised to see though, was the oil pressure started to drop from its normal running postion on the gauge, and there was white smoke everywhere. Is this normal and a characteristic of turbo cars,or is it something more sinister? :kicknuts:
Loss of oil pressure???
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Sep 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
My oil pressure gauge sits in the middle of the gauge at tickover (once warm) It might be a good idea to carry out a compression test to see what condition the engins in. It has been known for the oil pressure sender unit to pack up or go bad if so this is easy / cheep to sort out. Id still do the comp test though.
The white smoke sounds like head gasket might have gone to me it your coolent dirty.
If you find you need any spare parts go to www.sxoc.com (s12 section) someone on there will be able to get you owt you may need. Sorry about the plug but its abit more local!
Thanks for your advice on that,im gonna try an take the head off it an have a look at the gasket, and the rest of the engine whilst im at it.
Ive also noticed that there is also alot of white smoke coming from around the turbo in the car.when idling, its not so bad,but when the turbo and engine start to spool up,half the village disappears in a ploom of white smoke outta the exhaust, and the engine bay.could the turbo be knackered or could it just be one of the seals inside it???
Hope you have had more luck than me with your purchase, i've had seized handbrake cables, corroded sills, leaking radiator, seized rear brake calipers and the engine problems. Great cars though when theyre right, just be very careful when driving on wet or icy roads the back end comes round very easily and without much warning!!.
My own car had white smoke on start up (suspect head gasket) and white oily smoke when it was hot and the temp gauge hardly moved until i replaced the stuck open thermostat. Oil pressure went from 3/4 across the gauge to about 1/3 when the oil was hot as well as loads of white smoke as i suspect the thin hot oil got past seals more easily.
The oily smoke was reduced by having the valve stem oil seals replaced but never cured the problem completely. Anyway i got fed up with seeing cars disappear in a cloud of smoke and got hold of a rebuilt T25 turbo of a nissan 200sx (the old turbo had too much float on the rotor and i suspect the exhaust side seal had gone) , refaced the pitted valves, new guides, skimmed the pitted head, new head gasket etc. and the smoke was still there. :dontknow: So I'm now replacing the piston rings, shells etc. which should hopefully stop the smoking completely. My experience is pretty much the whole engine was worn and needing work after 125k miles so it might be easier to rebuilt the engine in one go rather than attempt a partial repair.
