Ok so i her liek 10 min from wher i live tehy will swap a sr20det motor for me for 3500$ but i was wondering how hard it would be to do it my self

Sr20det

As far as your question goes, unless you have experience with wiring, as well as using tools other than your basic sockets and wrenches, leave it to a qualified shop. Even I am weary to try it.
You need to be technically minded and somewhat experienced with cars. I did it mostly by myself on only the second car i have ever owned, took around a year (mostly waiting for money or to get time). If you are in any way not confident enough with cars to go pulling engines in and out at will then no don't touch a conversion.
ok, his is a very straight forward swap. My Two good points of advice.
Get all the parts you will need on the floor before pulling the car apart.
Make sure you have an extra car to drive, You will never ACTUALLY have all the parts on the floor you will Need.
Talk to people here (like Me) who have done the swap before, and pickup pointers on everything you will need.
If you spend $3500 on your'e self, you can probably upgrade the wheels or teh front mount ect.

This is true ASSUMING that he has technical skill, if you do go ahead, if you don't think you can rip most of your car apart and put it back together with reasonable confidence then engine swaps aren't for you, even if it does seem easy to some people.
with an extra car around and enough energy expent, it will Get done. There isnt any "special" multi thousand dollar tools needed for this swap. It's just time, and the right pointers.
But i mean. this is a DIY forum as I've been told repeatedly right? Everybody gets upset with me for offering SR swaps, or selling prefabed parts. So i dont discourage him, the only way i learned was being elbow deap in it.
ok Always remove the Trans and engine together. unbolt the hood. You will need a cherry picker, 4 jackstands, and 1 floor jack for this job. You will also need a 7,8,12, 14, 15,16, 17 mm open end box wrenches, 2 of each. YOu will need a 8, 10,12,14,15,16,17,19 and 27mm sockets both deep and short and doubles.(preferably 6 point, 12 just strip things.) You will need a Tourqe wrench (preferably 1/2 inch drive), a 1/2 drive ratchet, a 3/8 drive ratchet, a 2inch 1/2 drive extension. a 4 and 8 inch 3/8 extension. A pair of Good Snap ring pliers, and Set of needle nose pliers, small, medium, and large flat head screw driver, small medium and large Philips head screw driver. A hammer. and a razor.
you would also be good to invest in a decent timing light, and a multi meter with needle point ends.
You will need 8 quarts of oil, 4 quarts of straight 40 weight (150mile break in) and 4 quarst of 20-50w. You will need 2 quarts of preferably synthetic manual trans oil.
You will probably be good to order. A New clutch. New pressure Plate bolts for the 92 sentra Se-r from the dealer. A new Shifter Boot (from dealer), a new sending unit to gas tank o ring (dealer) and a300zx turbo fuel pump, (used ok) New from dealer, Pimp. But make sure Its OEM.
This will run you about 135 for the clutch and bolts and gaskets.
Fuel pump + - 200
new water pump 90
http://www.store.yahoo.com/phase2motorsports/oemsr20detwa.html
New spark plugs, NGK R Make sure you get resistance type.
Get the car up on all 4 jack stands. Unbolt the drveshaft in half. Knock off the dust cover with a flat head and hamemr from teh tail of the trans (dust cover is little black thing, do same on srtrans) unbolt the trans from the car (4 bolts on mounts) and the exaust... completely off...unbolt driveshaft loop. Undo mounst from engine, remove wiring harness. REMOVE SHIFTER using o-ring pliers, rmove radiator. Pull motor out. Completely remove S12 mounts. Use S13 mounts on sr, slot monts 4 mm forward. Drop sr onto mounts.bolt up trans mount (slot holes.) bolt up engine mounts. Route wiring harness. plug accesorries. Acept that you are F'd on speedo (unless rb20/r30 chassis parts are available) Use auto meter conversion box p/n 9117 tach adapter for tach. Use used electric fans, make crossover pipe from home depot for old radiator.
Take car to driveshaft shop for custom driveshaft (aparently no one is intrested in premade 1 peice driveshaft....DIY)
Wire 12 wires for 12volt necesary power on sr harness.
Start motor with 91 or high octane in the gas tank. install fuel pump before. Dont flood motor, Drive car with 50w for 150miles then change with 20-50.
Intercooler, i dont know, that your'e choice, you could route a sidemount into the front for some jdm tight status.
When you are at the point the motor is in the car and wired up. Give me a call for a walktrhough on getting it running corectly.
Have fun. You probably wont apreciate the car if you get it done at a shop.

Man you guys are a lot of help. To point out my confidence i am a mechanic at TIres Plus so i know a good deal abotu cars. I have changed ym mind ont eh motor thought. It would be cheaper for me to get a CA18det but i still dont knwo i canot deside. The only prob i woudl have w\ this swap would have to be the wireing. Im am very good in teh tech. or comouter wireing area but since i saw that swap i saw a shit load of wires. W/O the specs i woudlnt knwo where all teh wires go. NWo on everybodys opinion wat is better teh older CA18det9rebuilt) or Sr20det(rebuilt) I still canot deside.
oh lord.. dont get this thread started on the which is better CA or SR.. this could become ugly real quick
i personally like the CA18DET simply because it can hold somewhere around like 500hp (atleast thats what i read somewhere) on the stock bottom end and because the SR is way over-rated and over-hyped
Hehe like you said let's not get started again, bottom line you can't compare apples with oranges let's leave it at that. If you really want to compare apples with oranges go read the CA vs SR thread and prepare to come out of it none the wiser (as you would expect from comparing apples with oranges).
listen to Neb, his swap is fully Text book! i say it time and time again neb, you did a farkin good job.
and yes lets not get started on CA v SR
I wouldnt go doing a swap like this unless u are confident in your own mechanical skills, but that said, there's no better way to learn than being thrown in the deep end!
GL with it
ca18det and sr20det wiring are the same hence they both came out of the s13 chasis, and wiring is for ECM harness to chasis harness.
Hence, there is really no difference in dificulty of swap, one motor is just less than the other.

But don't you have to get the drive shaft shortened for the SR, where as you can use the tranny you have for th ca?
You can use the S12 trans with the CA18DET but some people put in the S13 trans which although it belongs to the same family is slightly longer and needs the tailshaft shortened just like the SR one does. Personally i'd leave the S12 trans in there and see how it goes :), they are next to nothing to replace (at least in oz they are).
short gearing trans, is fun in city, anoying on highway, and breaks around 250 hp.
1st gen fs5, built in shifter,
2nd gen fs5, removable shifter
3rd gen fs5, long tail shaft, stronger construction
graft together you're ca belhousing with a KAs13 trans from some kid who did an sr swap in a s13.
