whats the difference between the B and C tranny??
manual tranny??
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Oct 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
From what I've gathered, mainly the shifter mechanism. The C is supposedly a much smoother shifting tranny, not sure if there's any difference in the strength though...
b uses external shift linkage while c uses internal
Hmm
they look different too ;)

So my question is still.... Is there any strength difference???
wait those bell housings look a lot diff, it doesnt even look like those would bolt upto the same motor, are you sure those pics are right
So is it that the different cars come with the different engine? Mk1 Mk2?
Yeah umm I've been meaning to stir up a thread about this anyways, so I might as well ask here. I'm an 85 Turbo. Which do I have? What got what? Someone break it down for us... include all varieties of S12, including the SE's. I want to know what trannies our cars came with.
Now, I know the SE has a Borg-Warner T5. My 280ZX Turbo also came with a T5, only, it's different than the T5's found in Ford Mustangs and other similar cars. I'm told by the Z community that the Nissan-used versions were weaker, possibly stemming from different internals. The T5 that won fame is actually the so-called "World Class" version of the T5. That is not ours. Or the Z's. In the case of the Z, you can use the WC version with the Z bellhousing. I am sure you could prolly do the same with the SE S12's, but they don't put down a hell of a lot of power compared to a tuned L-series turbo engine. No S12 does with the exception of FJ which has its own tranny.
Now, I can tell you tho, the Nissan version of the T5 is still probably much stronger than what I have in my 85 S12 Turbo. What I am wondering is if it's possible to swap out for one.
the corolla with a 4age uses a t5 too they seem to not like more than 300 hp just like the nissans of the same type maybe a toyota could be substituted

Look on the tag on your firewall.....it says there...should start with FS, and the last letter should be B or C. Or look on the tranny itself as it's stamped there too.

looking at those pics I have a combination of the two the C belhousing and B gear trans, whats up with this:dontknow: ???
I just pulled the VG30ET out of my Z, and I plan to use that with my swap. I'll take some pics for you guys when I get a chance for comparison.
It's not that complicated
the "B" designation is the earlier crash box. As for strengths ... they put this tranny behind the FJ, so I'd say it's ok.
The "B" is a close ratio, pretty much a rally box.
The "C" tranny is the same transmission family, just buttery. It's like a toploader. Nissan brought it out because it's much friendlier to drive. The throw is a lot shorter too.
As for strength ... I've never heard of them breaking from anything other than neglect. Get steel synchros made for it and off you go.
Yes, those pics are right. Unless Nissan's fiche is wrong.
The T5 in the 300s is different than the T5 in the Mustang. Nissan bought the license to use the BW, but hated it. They tried at first to fix it (hence why it's different) but still were never satisfied with its strength, performance and cost.
so what is the gear ratio's of the "b" and "c" boxes.
With the b tranny, the shifter rumbles :).

The B, and the C have the same ratio, and as far as the ratios go, do a search, it has been stated at least five times...
