So yeah, what are the advantages/disadvantages ore which is better. I always thought V-mount was logically better because it directs the airflow into both IC and rad. I've recently heard its not good. I dunno, I'm all confused.
V-Mount Vs. FMIC
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Oct 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
do u mean like the signal s13 style... cause as long as you get good flow to the ic either will work just fine
V mount is better cos it is heaps cooler looking...thats my opinion, also if you dori dori into something your expensive cooler wont be toast. Either will be fine provided it gets a good feed of air (ducting etc for V mount).
Thats my main reason for planning a v-mount. Since I drift alot, I dont wanna hit something (cones) and have it smash up my IC.
How much ducting is required? just some fins at the top and bottom of v to direct airflow?
I'm sorry to sound like a newbie, but this is my first time dealing with a turbo setup and I'm still picking up on how it all functions correctly.

to do a v you will need a vent in the hood whcih will be hard cause there isnt much room for this.. i concidered a v mount for quite some time and realized its alot more work then i thought....now a fmic wont be a prob just dont hang the ic lower then the subframe that connects the front of the car
V mount would be easy ... you'd just need to cut and reweld the rad support to allow the rad/cooler to lean
My buddy's been trying for months to convince me to let him do it to mine so I've heard his speel, seen his diagrams ... shit he made a working cardboard model just to prove his point.
He looooooves that signal car
ya it would look sweet but really on our cars and power levels you wouldnt notice any diff with a v mount vs a fmic... trhe only reason they run a v mount is so the piping for the ic are short and throtle response and turbo lagged are reduced, but remember those cars are running large t3/t4 and pack more then 500-700whp...

I am not sure what V-mount is... but all i can guess is.... is this top-mount? If it is, this is the worst kind of mount, even worse than a side mount. A top mount in the hood creates a negative pressure area, which is actually not a good thing. It means your airflow will be stifled, because it's seeing air up from underneath, resisting the air trying to come in from the top. So your IC will suck because you won't flow air to it like a FMIC.
Rx-7 FC owners with that Turbo scoop tend to do away with their OEM topmounted IC's for this reason, as do WRX tuners. Look into it and you will see that a top mount is NOT the way to go, and that all the professional drift cars have FMICs. And there is a reason why. Look at all the pro rally WRX's and they ditch out the factory topmounted IC. topmount IC is for spool and response (as Bart mentioned above) as well as easier factory packaging.
If you worry about wrecking your car, then don't race it. Wrecks happen from time to time when you race. Especially if you race other than dragstrip.
I have no clue what you guys are talking about. :disgust:
V-mount is not top mount. To decribe it as best as possible its like a horizontal mount(kinda) but still in front of the engine. The radiator is tilted backward at the top and the IC is mounted horizontal in the space created by tilting the rad.
I race at the track always, but its not the dragstrip. Since I'm still learning I tend to hit cones while drifting and I'd like to minimize damage. Alot of Pro drifters, such as Signal Auto run v-mount but from what i hear its hard to set up properly.

This link show a pick from the top but not front view, i'll try to find some more.
here is a pic of a v-mount...

V mount is da bomb!
i have drawn up plans to do it on my S12, but unfortunately i need a custome IC made up and i have to cut out the radiator support frame (loose come chassis rigidity, but i can always brace it).
I say do it, but be prepared for some cutting and fabing. also you need a vented bonnet (large vents) to clear the hot air from the top intercooler, the rad air goes under the car. And another thing, a radiator header tank with cap higher than the highest point in the coolant system, to catch air pockets and a place to fill up the system and mount a rad cap.
but apart from that, its easy!

This style vent would be the best for this setup. In the big mouth bumper, through the I.C. and out the vent. Along with some sheet metal ducting so the hot air exits the engine bay with a quickness. Piant example.
From what I can tell, V-mount will suck unless you have a reverse vent in your hood, and shielding from the engine heat.
All the profesional drift cars at both the championships Radracer and I went to see had front mounts. Except for the 8-6 and the GTO, because they had no intercoolers.
I won't stick a device designed to cool air inlet charge that close to the engine. That pic looks like an RX-7. They don't have much choice from what I am told. I do :)
the thing is that if we where to use it on our cars you'd need to get a really small rad that would allow enough angle to use the ic properly.. but aside form looking sweet fmic is the best and most effecient way to go aside from air to water intercoolers
