I have a mate who has a alloy rad fitted to his S12, but i can't work out what it is from, it is a little deeper top to bottom, and has some U channel to hold it.

It is a Nissan one, hose fitting and cap are in the same spot, plastic tanks, comes with 300mm twin fans on a plastic cowling, very light and works well.

Has anyone looked at upgrading theirs?

maybe a 300zx 89 model ?

cheers

I wouldn't take plastic end tanks on a radiator if you paid me. WHen they crack, the whole radiator pours out. And they crack. Easilly.

Yeah that is going to be a worry, but if i can save 10kg it might be a risk i need to take, more so if they are common and i can carry a spare.

I'd be interested in upgrading now that the warmer months are around ie 37 degrees last week hehe (thats celsius by the way). If it turns out to be a cheap option i'll be there. I had thought of getting two standard S13 radiators or somthing then taking the plastic tanks off and getting them welded together into one alu end tank at each end, essentially a home made twin core i guess. Havn't done anything other than think of the idea but it might be worth looking into to.
Oh yeah and FLY PSI had his SR20DET rad give out hte other day, one of the spigots broke on his plastic tanked radiator. I think it was heat affected or somthing tho, usually they are tough as.

Replacement after market, but no plastic :)

Dude, you don't weaken your system for a mere 10kgs. That's foolish. You take out your passenger seat and lose 60kgs+/-plus 200kgs+/- for the guy who can't ride with you anymore LOL

seat only weighs 6kg, co drive is 52kg, i need more out :)

I am at a loss where else to loose weight, cut bar brakets to bits, door intrusion bars (9 lbs ea) Need more out of the front and anything that is over hang of the front or rear wheels is a good thing for car balance as well as sheer weight.

I have a 3 row copper rad with 2x Holden commodore AC 12" fans, the whole thing would be near on 20kgs, that's a hell of a lot over the front wheels!!!

The other thing i have is front 4 pot 300zx calipers, they aren't lite either!, but i am unsure what else to fit that bolts on other than some AP calipers that will be over 1k!

I think that some late model nissan 4 pots are alloy instead of cast iron, might be somthing to look into further. Like i said before a pair or triplet of cheap alloy rads (ie silvia etc) with custom top tanks joining them all might be cheaper than aftermarket and big to. Other than that poke around a wreakers like pick and pay less in Blacktown and see what might or might not fit in it's place which is big and alloy.

yeah my 4 pots seem to be alloy, but they are bloody heavy!

they are 89 300zx turbo ones.

Might call in at Zed parts tomorrow while down that way in hornsby, see what he has:)

Just take a few eggs with you just in case. ;) lol

Look, if you want an alloy radiator, go with a custom race radiator with full metal alloy endtanks, and sitck on an ultralight low profile fan, those two things alone will both save weight and improve cooling.

i was looking the other day and it looks like my greddy radiator for my 240sx would work in the s12. all it would take is some gates hoses (the kind that you can bend) and a mount for the top half to keep it snug.

what do you austrailian guys think of PWR/KJ?

I've adapted alot of the OEM s13 radiators to 5 s12's, and i love their stuff..

PWR are one of the best rad manafactures, make most rads for the V8 supercar teams, very good Intercoolers too!
