my 84 has had this problem since i got it. whenever you first start the car and turn on the a/c and the lights they are kinda dim/not blowing so hard. the first time i hit 3,000 rpms the headlights brighten up and the a/c works as it should. any ideas?

it can be a lossen generator belt

just replaced all the belts when i got the car.... if anything i over tightened it

its the iaa i think .. basically thats whats suppose to add fuel when a load is placed on the engine like the lights or a/c...

whats your voltage like?? you can bet your balls that it goes down close to 12V when the ac isn't blowing hard once you have been driving a bit or get the revs over say 1200rpm (if your alt is working properly) then it should be normal i would suggest your alt just isn't charging as well as it used to if this is really noticable untill you get over 3000 rpm but i wouldn't worry about it till it dies.

I disagree with you shane....sideways get it checked out NOW.....mine did that and now my car drains a bettery like a mofo......i believe it is my alternator that is screwed from it. If it happens every day....get it check out ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure to check the wires going from the alternator to the batt. I mean rip open the loom ant inspect the wires, thats how my car ****ed me over 3+ times!!!

i think it may be due to the fact that my driver door "striker button" does not work and it leaves my interior lights on all the time.. thanks for the input guys

That would definately not help your problem. I would be disconneting this first, then see what happens...

well i looked at it and it seems to be due to the fact that my door doesn't shut all the way. i need to bend it a little and realign the striker

..check the IAA, check your alternator voltage output...

When you first start your car, the alternator is not energized. When you rev the engine the alternator uses battery voltage to energize the electromagnets around the stator. Once the alternator is energized, it produces enough current to keep itself energized at all rpms.

Your lights dim and your AC bogs because your car is running off of the battery and not the alternator. At least thats my guess.
