ok so here is the plan so far I want to build a Solo2/autocross S12. I wanted to know how much boost a ca18et can handle as well as what a ca18det can take. I'd like to know if it is worth saveing up for the det or just sticking with my et? one other question was did the det have 8 spark pugs like the et?Also getting replacement parts for the det easy or hard? costly or not? im shure ill have more questions as I get farther into this idea.

Trying to do this right the frist time

Ok the Et from the factory is set to around 5psi max, but most people can put it to around 10-15 on the stock turbo (until it finally gives out). The CADET is set to around 10psi from the factory, and I believe that reliably it can be put to about 15-20 psi on the factory turbo. Getting replacement parts for the DET can be somewhat easy because the CA18DE shares amny of its parts with the DET, and the DE was put into the Pulsars for a couple years. Also the aftermarket seems to be starting to recognise the DET now. Now as far as the plug situation goes the Det has four, and the plugs are located in between the two cam shafts. Coils are located on top of the plugs, and it has distributerless ignition. Also as far as picking which is better, that could start an argument, but for the most part people favour the DET...mostly because of the compression ratio, and the fact that dohc seems to be the in thing...however I would personally go with either a the 18ET, make the 20E a turbo with the 18ET electronics, or even go with a KA24E and put a turbo on it. All these motors are cheaper to start with, and unless you get really custom, or exotic parts they are cheaper to fix...If you decide to go with the CA20, make sure to talk to YellowPreludeR, he has done it, and he can tell you what to look out for...And SLEEPNS12 can help if you decide to go with a KA, if you deside to go with the CADET talk to Scooter or Euroboy, who has just finished his. If you plan to build up your CA18ET there are a lot of members familiar with that engine so no matter which you decide on, help is here...8)
Thanks, I think ill stick with my ca18et for now but im still going to do more research on the ca18det before I go all out my et.
YOU PUT A FACTORY TURBO WITH A CERAMIC EXHAUST WHEEL UP TO 20PSI THEN YOU AINT GONNA HAVE NO TURBO FOR MUCH LONGER!!!!!!!! Unless you like looking for the exhaust wheel in the cat!?
Id like to see any CA18DET take 20psi of hot air from a crappy factory turbo!! Detonation ne1?
The money spent putting the DET into the S12 could beb etter spent on the et!
20psi..... come on
Edit: sorry i got only 2 hours sleep last nite and im a bit edgey! Sorry :bomb:
Indeed, anything with a ceramic exhaust wheel (ie CA18DET S13/U13 SR20DET R33/R34 RB25DET) will lose it's exhaust wheel if pushed past 1 bar to often or even used near 1 bar for prolonged periods (ie on the circuit). It literally falls off and gets lodged in the cat...bummer)
Is your car totally stock now? If it is then dont mess with anything. Modifiying your engine, turning up the boost, whatever, will put you in a modified class. Invest your money in tires and shocks/struts instead. You will be way faster with good tires and a weak engine then with hard tires and a good engine.
Here is a page with SCCA Solo2 rules and classes:

I was going from what I had heard, but I can't remember if it was a stock turbo or not. Also I think it is a given that an IC would be used no matter which motor you decide on. Good to know about the DET turbo though...
