I have just received 2 original 32 page mint condition Japanese market sales brochures for the mkII s12 silvia and and mkI s12 Gazelles.
Mk I Gazelle brochure, (same as a silvia, just sold through different dealer networks to the silvia in Japan as a Gazelle), icludes all specs of vehicles and engines for 1984, including FJ20ET, and has gloss full color photographs. I speak Japanese, but can't read to well, but my wife is Japanese and so I get her to read what I want to know.
Mk II s12 silvia specs are as I suspected all along, (I actually knew before from a nissan parts catalogue I have on disc which shows the production years and specs for Japan), the ca18det motor was offered right from the start of the mk II production in Japan, from 3/86 onwards. It was offered in the top 2 spec vehicles for both coupe and hatch, basicly the ca18det replaced the fj20et that was offered in the earlier mk1 Silvias and Gazelles.
So the ca18det s12's would have been reasonably common in Japan.

Does this mean the MKII RS-X has the CA18DET then?

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #3

Not nessessarily, as i recall from somewhere it's possible to get a non turbo RS-X as well, they had alot of different versions with alot of different motors. Gerry will know for sure tho :)

Yes Alex, in the brochure beside the mkII engine to model specs are RS-X = ca18DET, RS is also CA18DET, Turbo R-X = CA18ET, R-X = CA18s, R-L = CA18S. This is in order from top spec to bottom spec. One thing I find is a bit wierd is that a CA18E was offered for the mkI, but in the mkII, the ca18e is not listed as available for any vehicle, it drops from the ca18et down to the carb ca18s.

Also, I never knew that Nissan made a CA18E, got that thing must be gutless!!

It's extremely important that we get information like this scanned so that I can post it permanently on the Club-S12 webpage. It's rare that we find this type of original info on these cars.

I've got no access to a scanner I'm sorry. I'm just finishing off a major project and then heading to Japan with the wife and kids for a month.
If I get time in the mean time I'll try to arrange to get it done, otherwise after I come back.

Re s12's in Japan in junkyards, well I'd say its worse than that. I did not see one s12 on the road or in a junkyard when I lived in Japan from early 1999 to early 2001, and I had a company car and used to drive around a lot , and also travelled to different regions, and even did a few junkyard crawls in my sparetime. I'd say most of them were scrapped up to 10 yaers ago. There is certainly some there in the hands of collectors and still some getting around, but pretty rare. Also I'd say collectors would be mainly interested in The FJ20 cars.

I'm pretty sure any Kinko's or Mailboxes Etc. can scan stuff for you.

gerrybg, where do you live, I am sure somebody (my self included) would be happy to scan stuff for you...

Also a couple of other things of interest I noticed:

The front grille emblem everybody loves is used on this mkII. Seems to be on every model spec's front grille.

Power figures for the various engines are:

CA18DET = 145 hp, (same engine as the s13 ca18det, but intake manifold, injection control and ignition system are different, which are basicly crap in comparison to the s13 system, hence the lower power. If you ended up with one these engines you'd be best off swapping the whole intake and ignition system and the engine loom and ECU for an s13 ca18det one, to get the potential out of the motor).

ca18et = 135hp

ca18S(carb type) = 100hp

Okay I have a friend who has a scanner. He asked how many pages there were, I told him 60 or so all up, so he said sh..t!, he'll scan a couple of pages each day. So I'll leave the brochures with him before I go to Japan and they should be ready when I come back.

Awesome, I am dying to see them...8)
