Can sum ome explain this to...?
how you go about doing it...
and how reliable it is?
thanks guys
welding diff....
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Apr 2005" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
Basically you weld up the (spider ?) gears in rear diff, which prevents the diff from transferring the power to the slipping wheel. and makes the diff transfer power to both the rear wheels. Essentially your open diff besomes a positraction diff.
As far as reliability goes, it will be almost as reliable as what it was before...depending on how well you weld it.
Just remember that this is a good setup if you like drifting, but other wise it can make everyday driving rather difficult...
Bart should weld up his old busted R200 and put it in for a weekend. He can have his g/f take video footage of him drifting like a madman.

He can have his g/f take video footage of him drifting like a madman.I suggested that in the thread where he broke it, but I am not sure he took too well to that suggestion...if he does it I can see him breaking it again (seeing as how it is already weak), and then afterwords we should make up shirts for him saying "you broke an R200; thats nothing...I broke 2!!!"...8) Plus if Bart does do this, he can report as to how the car drives with a welded diff...8)

umm you mean fiance.... sorry the woman made me say so...lol...j/k.
Fine, then, Vic is your "SO" (significant other).

Nah, Significant Other just screams "Gay".
Hi, I'm Paul, and this is my significant other Mario.

If done properly then it will be stronger then the stock open diff. i now a have welded diff in my S12, it has a solid axle rear end. Neb should have some vids up soon of me drifting it on the track yesterday. :banger:
Dont Be Soft, Just Weld It
Welded diff.
It coled ELSD Electrod Limited Slip Diff :-D

How do you find driving with a welded diff on the street?
How do you find driving with a welded diff on the street?
Thats what I would like to know...this is the only thing holding me back from doing it...
I hope it drives good..... if we can get a welder in today...its going to be done so i will let you all know how it is if we do it....
I welded the diff in an old charger I used to own and it was great in a straight line but in the corners it handled like a garbage scow. And I broke both my axles within two months. I you have sticky tires and drive agressively you run the risk of snapping axles (in our case halfshafts) so I would say unless your planning on using the car for mostly drifting It's not really worth it.

Oh but I do plan to drift it, and sticky tires are not usually found on my car ;)
With a wleded diff it is easer to drift threw corners then to turn normaly.
and its inposible to go fast on small curvs either u will end up drifting or out of the road. Im planing to do thei but i need a spear diff. My friends did that in an old fiat 125p 1,5 liter engine 65 hp and they drifted threw hole roundabout, (US) traffic circle a few times untill police showed up.
the only times a car is difficult to drive (with the locker) is in a carpark, trying to turn the car in a very small radius at very slow speed (~1km/h), doing a U turn with a cop behind you, and trying to push it around a turn, push as in a couple of mates behind the car pushing!
apart from that its fine.
Awesome I am so going to do this!!
Ah, the great Lincoln Locker... yes, a welded diff should be stronger than a standard diff. The problem you run into is the axle shafts wrap up, and this can cause them to snap. If you have a solid axle, you can get custom axles from Moser for around $300, they are designed to handle that kind of abuse. The best way to weld a diff is to fill in the valleys between the teeth on the spider gears and the side gears. You want to leave enough teeth to let the gears engage, but if you do it right, they won't be able to move, and you can still take it apart if need be.

This gear was welded straight to the other gears, but it illustrates my point. Fill in the valleys, and you can engage the gears without them being able to move.
For IRS type axles, I don't know how axle wrap will affect the shafts.

We shall soon find out...
