Thanks1. 6 1/2" won't fit, too big. You can fit a 6" speaker though. It just barely clears the sheet metal. A 5 1/4" will generally give tighter sound, whereas a 6" will be better at producing low tones. You don't really want bass in your front stage anyways, so I would go with the 5 1/4" and put a bigger 6 1/2" or 6x9 speaker in the rear to deal with the bass notes.
2. No, you don't need one, but you want one. The deck has enough power to power speakers just fine, but it's 'dirty' power. Lots of distortion at high volumes. If you run an amp, not only will the sound be louder, but it will be clear at all volumes as well. But just do whatever you can afford, don't think you need an amp for it to work. The deck power will be just fine for 90% of the people out there.

dan a regular 6x9 would not fit in the back, because of the irregular hole shape...so wat do you suggest doing to fix that problem?...should i just order some speciality fit speakers?
make up speaker baffles.
I made some with 1/4" plywood. wasn't hard at all. just need sandpaper, a dremel with sanding drums, a drill, time, and patience.
aww...thnx indy,...quick and easy way to do it up...(by the way, the name is jwill...i don't think we have spoken)...but uhh...i got 6 1/2" in the front and blown at speaks inda back...and uhh...i dont think i want 6x9" cuz of the quality of sound...so i might jus get 7's or sumthin...possibly some woof's...

i have moddded my back openings for blaupunkt pcxt693 which are 6x9 and have installed blaupunkt pcxt652 in the doors which are 6.5 inch speakers, all i had to do to get the door speakers in was to four mounting holes(the factory speakers were only mounted with three screws).
all four of my factory speakers were 6.5 inchs with factory cassett player.
dont know if this info is same for all years , but my 1985 hb can and did have 6.5 speaker from the factory
if you have notch I just made a new percal shelf go to my web page the link should be under my sig .

Ok I gotta ask, what is the badge on your drivers side opposite the Nissan logo???
i'm thinking about wiring a 6X9 into the middle of the back between the 2 6's i have back there (notch).
why?
just play with your balance to get the sound centered.
that's what I do(well..did...the stock speakers couldn't handle it and distort badly so for now I have bad rear fill, but moving the balance forward sounds so good)
to get more sound out of the back of course.
rear fill sucks ass
perhaps, i'm replacing the fronts with some sexy infinities first. rockford in the back for the lows, infinities up front for the highs = the best you're going to get without an amp.
k, i'm gonna ask this one last time - does anyone know the definate size of my front speakers (notchback), or am i going to have to take them out first? the most recent size i've got was from a&b, who said the fronts were 7". i humored him but in the end walked away, wtf is a 7" anyways?
he's daft lol
must've seen you(young guy) and thought "civic driver" (civics are 7 in front 6x9 in back)
they way I understand it, is 5 1/4 front for notch...
but you know what? best thing to do, is to just open her up, and get a measurement.
yeah but the s12 doorpanels are complex and annoying bitches.
They're complex ? I can get both of mine off in like 5 minutes ;)
Anyways, they're 5.25" but they have a large rim, so you may be able to fit larger ... I'm pretty sure a 6" would work, maybe a 6.5" (not sure), but 5.25" is the original size and I know it works ...
Even if it's a little big, it wouldn't be too hard to make it fit or take it back ... I'd worry more about depth ...

Just remember that the original units are a 3 screw fixing compared to 4 on most aftermarket equipment , so be prepared to drill the door....
