i was just recently given a 1985 nissan 200sx its body is pretty strait n the interior is there though i have to play put together due to previous owner striping everything out to track dwn a short anyway the car seems to have the v6 egi engine (its my first nissan plz xcuse any noobness i might portray in this post ) anyway my question is has anyone ever converted one of these from a manuel trans to a automatic? this car's engine was just replaced with a low millage japan engine an a new clutch but as a stick its worthless to me so im thinking of tryin to convert it or if all else fails sell the car though id rather try n convert it first :)
hi all im new to your forums but was wondering...

Why is it useless to you as a stick? If you can't drive a stick shift, why don't you learn? I was once an automatic guy too. Once I learned how to drive a stick shift, I will NEVER go back when it comes to a sporty car. It is a lot more fun and much easier to control the power band with a manual transmission. Anyway, I don't think you'll find anyone here who has ever, or will ever, do a manual to automatic swap.
The only reason you should ever use an automatic transmission is if you went to 'Nam and had a leg blown off and you can't work a clutch pedal.
That's the only reason. Everyone else should drive stick, by law. :)
I have to agree with everyone else here. It's way more fun to drive plus performance wise it is also better to have a manual trans. Less loss of power through the drivetrain. Automatics are :gay:
First of all. WELCOME to the Club!
Secondly, i agree that going from 5spd. to Auto is kinda odd, but everyone has their preferences. I learned to drive stick in my 88 200sx, only because its what i bought. (im glad i bought it, and give it a few months and you'll appreciate the car im sure!). However, if you do decide to go from Manual to Auto, im sure no one here will like it, but its not out car, its YOUR car, do what you want (NO RICE PLEEZ!!!) and im willing to give advice as much as i can...but i can tell you its ALOT more fun as a stick. also..you have an 85 200 w/ a v6. someone apparently swapped the motor, run the vin maybe see what it had.. see if you can put up some pics as well..
i agree that a manual trans is the best way to go for sheer joy an enjoyment of any car but unfortunatly due to a car accident a few yrs ago i am now para from the waist dwn so i have no way of controling a clutch :( everything i drive has to be with hand controls but anyway so the 1985 model should not have a 6cyl in it huh well looks like i better go threw this car a lil better n figure out what other complications might arise ty all very much for your imput an ill deff try n get a few pics on the car
:wall: <--- feels like an ass...sorry to hear that, keep us updated!
Well, don't I just feel like an ass now. Geez, sorry to hear about your misfortune in life, but glad you found your way here regardless. Honestly, I'm not sure what all it would take to do a manual to auto swap, but I do know that besides the auto tranny itself, you will need the automatic transmission wiring harness, as well as the transmission control module. Make sure you get the flex plate and everything else that goes between the motor and the tranny. I would also have to assume that you will need the driveshaft from an auto tranny equipped V6 S12. I hope someone has some more definitive answers for you, although a service manual would probably go a long way in helping to determine what is needed as well.

Ouch. Well I guess there's two reasons then for driving an automatic. :( I'm glad you're still driving though! That takes a lot of dedication on your part.
its ok i took no offence i coulda been a lil more specific in my first post of y i wanted to convert to a auto so was my fault :) but i realy do like the body syle of this car an would like to hold on to it so i will look into getting a manual on it n look up in it to c what the major component difrences will b ty all for your input :)
What you might do is hang out on the forums. A lot of the young guys want to do automatic to manual conversions. You might be able to work a swap with them.
I personally hate manual transmissions, despite the fact that 3 of my cars have them. From my standpoint, they are useful on icy roads though.
I did look into putting hand controls on an S12 a few years back. It looked to be a pretty easy conversion. Lots of decent mounting places that won't require a major reroute of the wiring harness.
The S12 also lends itself to independence if one has some mobility. Unlike some cars, one can get a small folded up wheel chair to fit right behind the drivers seat with minimal lifting.
Good luck to you
Ron
You will need to get a computer for an automatic car and the harness for the trans. You will also need the driveshaft as they are different lenghts. The TPS (throttle possision sensor) and the shifter of course you should be in good shape. That should be it.
Anything else guys?
Besides the obvious........Trans and flexplate.
Oh yeah....I have an 87 FSM and I own a V6 auto. I also used to have a V6 stick (wrecked).
