OK, for anyone interested, I'm gonna start a thread here to keep everyone up to date on the progress of this project. I still feel bad about abandoning the CA20ET project, but with everything that's happened the last couple weeks, I just can't pass up this opportunity.

First of all, grabbed a S14 KA24DE for $50, guy told me the block had a hole in it. I figured, the head and intake's probably worth that, so I went and picked it up. Now after talking to him, he said he couldn't find the hole in the block, and the car was running when he pulled it, but it was knocking. So I figure that's cool, probably one spun rod bearing like every other KA in the world.

Then when he brings me to the motor, he gives me all the front accessories (PS pump, alternator, A/C, etc), the intake, exhaust, and the freakin perfect shape tranny!!!! I'm thinking, "man this deal just keeps getting better." Then he threw in the A/C condensor and aluminum radiator!!!

So anyway, got it back to the shop and finally got to tearing it down today. Pulled the valve cover and the thing looks like brand new inside. Not a bit of sludge build up ANYWHERE! So I get the head pulled off, and the block looks to be in pretty good shape. Pull the oil pan, and immediately found the knock. #2 rod bearing was completely gone (I'll get some pics later). The good part is that there's a chance that the crank shaft can be turned, and I've got another set of rods to use.

All the other bearings looked like brand-spankin new. What a shame such a good motor went to crap like that. Anyway, it's all good for me! I'm cleaning up parts right now, and I'll probably be ordering the Wiseco forged pistons later today.

Hopefully the long block will be completely done by the end of the year, and then I have to fit it in the car and see if an S13 turbo manifold will clear the S12's engine bay.

Still going back and forth between a bottom mount and top mount manifold, the top mount I'm afraid might be too close to the master cylinder, but the bottom mount might be too close to the steering rack.

I've got a friend who told me I could borrow his bottom mount to see if that'll fit though...

you might want to try and find a 91 S13 DE in the wreckers

S14 KAs come with 232/232 cams, the 91s had 240/258

if you can find 2 91 DEs, just run both exhaust cams

with a T3/4 ... jebus, your S12 is gonna move!

that tranny is going to feel like butter compared to the B coming out too ;)

Joel07date not saved · #3

Yeah, I've got a line on a set of S13 cams already... ;) Thanks for the tip though!

Yeah, I think it'll go pretty good, shooting for about 350-375 at the flywheel. Oh, and speaking of trannys, I got a spare one yesterday, my buddy couldn't use it since he's got an S13. I really didn't know there was that much of a difference in the trannies, but oh well, my gain!

So right now I've got three KA motors, one CA20, one SR20, and just got a D-series Honda motor yesterday... :evillaug: Not to mention the two 350 chevy's and piles of 302 Ford junk...

I dare you to bolt them all together, and put them into some crazy chassis...that thing would be nuts...*lol*

Haha... I don't think I'll do that, but I'll tell ya one thing. I started tearing down the SR20 today, and I'm not at all impressed. I'm gonna get it all tore down and put em side by side and take some comparison pics between it and the KA24. Now all I need is a CA18DET to compare to... :evillaug:

...so which KA can I have ;)

If u can get that AC to fit, let me know how u did it, I've tried numberous different ways on trying to hook it up, but it was a no go.

The turbo mani hopfeully should clear the steering. I have a set of hotshot headers, that BARELY clear it haha

Yeah, I'll let you know. I almost hate to screw with it since the A/C worked perfect with the stock motor in it. I might have to scrap it all anyway to make room for the intercooler, but we'll see. I'd really love to have a 12 second car that gets 20 mpg and has A/C... 8-)

Took a bunch of pictures so I'll have some before/after shots. Check it out:

hurry up and get it done!!

too bad I'm kinda low on funds, but after the holidays, I'll prolly get my KA24DE turbo'd...or at least start piecing things together..

Joel07date not saved · #12

Well, got the block bored yesterday, and ordered some Wiseco 9:1 pistons for it today so I can finish hone it to size. I was kinda dissappointed though since I found a website that advertised ARP head and main studs for the KA, then when I called ARP to try and get a part number for it, they said they don't make studs for that motor. So obviously this website is selling studs made for something else that fit the KA reasonably well. The ARP guy kinda advised against it though, and said if it fit the KA's, then they (ARP) would have listed it that way.

Oh well... One step closer anyway... :banger:

sidewaysdate not saved · #13

i have seen several places that have them.... i thinkn sport compact car even featured a article with them... or maybe it was turbo mag

http://www.ka24de.com/ has them

Joel07date not saved · #14

Yeah, I know. That's the website I just sent an e-mail to. I talked to the tech guy at ARP, and he said that they DO NOT make them for a KA24. That's not saying that another application won't fit, but they do not make them for the KA24. I don't think the tech line at ARP would lie to me...

Joel07date not saved · #15

Well, got an e-mail back from www.ka24de.com, and he said that the studs are custom made for them. So, looks like I'll be buying from them! They must have bought A LOT of studs to get them for the prices they are. Custom studs from ARP are definetly not cheap...

YellowPreludeRdate not saved · #16

joel, would you want to sell me one of those ka engines? Im planning on doing a s13 buildup and to get a ka engine would be great. Maybe you would be interested in some parts for trade or just some cash. Lemme know cause im in Atlanta and a short drive for my friend to go pick it up. Let me know, thanks.

Joel07date not saved · #17

Sent you a PM, yellow...

Well, just got some bad news. The crank that I thought was gonna be good is bent .024. So, I'm gonna take the other one I've got (which was tore up pretty bad), and see if he can grind that one out. Otherwise I guess I'll have to go with a remanufactured crankshaft, which I'd like to stay away from since they do some crazy stuff to remanned pieces...

Joel07date not saved · #18

Whoo hooo!!! Got my Wiseco's in last week, and this is actually the first time I've bought any Wisecos for a 4 cylinder car, and let me tell you, I'm impressed. Very nice looking, already matched within .7 grams out of the box, skirt coated. Well, I'll let the pics do the talking.

So now I'm waiting for my ARP studs, and I can go ahead and finish all the block work. Bringing another crank to the grinder today, so I'll find out this week if I'm gonna have to order a crank or what...

Alex Frostdate not saved · #19

Very Nice, I have always been impressed by Wiseco's work...glad to hear they came through for you...8)

Joel07date not saved · #20

Got the ARP Rod bolts, main studs, and head studs in yesterday...

Too bad I don't have the time to mess with it now though. I'm picking up the hatchback 87 tomorrow (which is probably the car that the KA will end up in), and between all the work that has come in the last few days, and my second job of pulling parade floats all over the state, I've been too busy to even touch it.

Joel07date not saved · #21

Here's a couple more pics of the buildup.

Boring the block:

Joel07date not saved · #22

Finally got a good crankshaft! Had to turn it .010 on the mains, and .020 on the rods, but I'd still rather have that than a remanned POS. So, the only parts I need now are bearings, and I'll have all the parts needed to shortblock it.

Maybe next week when Henge comes over, we'll be able to get it align-honed and decked, and maybe even hone the cylinders. Then I just need to finish up polishing the rod beams, put in the ARP rod bolts and recondition them.

Whew, sounds like a lot when I list it all out like that. Bad part is, I've got 4 motors to finish here in the shop, 2 of them need to be fully built, and 1 I have to shortblock. I guess that's a good problem to have though.

interesting boring machine setup. If you have time I would be interested in some details on it.

Arrodate not saved · #24

I am eagery awaiting this project, actually. I keep my eyes on things in this forum believe it or not.

I would have gone 8:1 with boost, but that'sme I like the ability to run higher boost because that's where the power is at.

hengedate not saved · #25

yeah.. Joel has been swamped with work lately so we havent really been able to do too much with the KA,.. hopefully this week tho we'll get some stuff done on it,..

after he gets those couple of motors done and we finish up his KA project and i get my truck motor done, we will be able to start on my project too  and once completed Joel and I will have some of the quicker S12's

it'll be fun to see who's is faster :dontknow:

Joel07date not saved · #26

Yeah, Henge is right. I've got two motors in line to be assembled, then I've got a KA (not mine) that I promised out this month. So, it's going slowly but surely, mostly just slowly...

interesting boring machine setup. If you have time I would be interested in some details on it.

It's actually a pretty standard Kwik-Way stand that uses an airbag to hold the block up against the table. It's got an old Van Norman boring bar mounted on it. It's probably gonna be gone before long though, I haven't ever really liked using it all that much, and we're wanting to upgrade to something that can do the stepped (Darton, etc.) sleeves, and we'll need a CNC machine to do that. So we're looking pretty seriously right now at a Rottler F67A, which will run close to $80k...

I would have gone 8:1 with boost, but that'sme I like the ability to run higher boost because that's where the power is at.

I've gone back and forth on this, and if I change my mind, I can always run a thicker head gasket, but I want good off-boost response, and I think with a good tune I'll still be able to push a decent amount of boost. Also, the Wiseco's only come in 9:1... But like I said, the head gasket that I'll be going with comes in about 10 different thicknesses if I change my mind.

Well I'm glad to hear you did indeed give it lots of thought. You're thinking, and that's the important part. You don't seem like some guys I've run into over the years who think "this is the only way to do it". You consider possibilities. So I'm very anxious to see the results of your "musings" :)

posted image.................PAGE 13 FOR PIX DUMP!!!I'm starting this thread to document adding a rear mounted turbo to a 88 SE VG30/5SPEED..The conversion consists of adapting the 1986 300zx turbo/ECU/INJECTORS/IDLE parts over to the 200sx SE..I started mounting the remote mount turbo today.I have it positioned where the muffler was mounted. The muffler hangers and brackets were reused to support the T3 300zx turbo. The turbo exhaust is angled similar to the stock look. The inlet flange is already hooked up to the exhaust. It looks a little bulky but I think its because the car is still up on the ramps.Once the car is lowered down, it will probably look better.Spray it with some flat black high temperature paint and it will blend in some. There is plenty of room for a AFM and a cone filter as well.Right now these run along side the left rear tire, so maybe a dirt shield of some kind will need to be added....tomorrow I might start fitting the pressure side piping back up front to the throttlebody.
MagnumApr 15, 2005, 9:34 am · #29

what are you using to pump the oil to the turbo?

Joel07Apr 15, 2005, 9:58 am · #30

Good luck with it, I\'ll definetly be interested to see how it works out.  I\'m still thinking it\'s gonna be kinda laggy though...

mcApr 15, 2005, 12:23 pm · #31
posted image..i'm going to be picking up a Tilton electric differential oil pump....it has been used by others with good results....it's a little pricey but everything else sofar has been cheap good junkyard stuff.....I test fitted the pressure pipe up to the T/B and it fits up the drivers side of the engine with no problem.Plenty clearance past the steering shaft as well.I 'd post pictures but Ihave no luck linking them up.I can e-mail if someone else wants to post them.

thats gotta be one SWEET oil pump. its gotta move some serious lubrication. Also, are you going to be using any sort of MAP sensor/different ECU?

KeithApr 15, 2005, 11:37 pm · #34

I hear they have kits like this for F body camaros, trans ams, and firebirds.  Sounds interesting....but I would have to agree.....I would think it would be kinda laggy....but you never though.

Jsvob03Apr 15, 2005, 11:42 pm · #35

I read through the STS website, and all the other goodies, and they claim that its no more lag than that of a stock air intake.

Summit sells the pump for a little under 200....right now I plan to reuse the 300zx ecu/afm[n/a from a 86 car]...a couple people on Z31.COM state there cars run fine on the stock ecu and injectors when they converted to a turbo...we\'ll see.

any pics?

mcApr 17, 2005, 5:52 pm · #38

I worked on fitting the air cleaner and afm on the turbo today and it fits great...I used the bottom housing of a 300zx air cleaner assembly and fit it in between the gas tank and rear differential pumpkin...there is enough room to pivot the housing in any direction,I decided to have it face down to drain any water that might get thrown its way...its a better location than before where it was adjacent to the left rear wheel..tomorrow I\'ll start on the inlet oil line.

Joel07Apr 17, 2005, 6:28 pm · #39

You have to understand though, that these kits they sell are for very large displacement V8\'s, with small turbos and low boost.

Hopefully it\'ll work good with the larger VG30 at low boost, but I am definetly excited to see how it turns out!!!
Crowbar60Apr 17, 2005, 8:25 pm · #40

I think thats why its important to keep the exhaust pipe diameter small.  No more than 2 inches at most.  I wonder what effects it could have on a blow off valve?  I imagine since the overall boosted volume is large, its forgiving.

What happened to the other thread?

Joel07Apr 18, 2005, 7:59 am · #41

We lost the other thread in the big crash we had last month.  We lost everything all the way back to 10/04.

JasterM5Apr 18, 2005, 9:03 am · #42

I went and I checked out MC\'s project and its awesomeness. My only concern is for that air intake. I think you\'re gonna have to rotate it up or something because as it is now. If you drive in rain its screwed.

mcApr 18, 2005, 7:05 pm · #43

Yeah Jaster,I agree[btw... any problems on the return drive??].... but this car will probably be driven in decent weather only...I can tilt the air cleaner angled forward for easy ram effect  or tilt toward the rear to keep rain from blasting in[or face it at 12]...today I was able to connect the oil supply line from the engine and back to the turbo...the oil banjo fitting connects to the block right by the rear of alternator[just remove the old plug bolt]...I used one long length of brake line tubing and snaked it along the undercarrage....its zip tied for the time being.....i have to call Summit to order the pump so i can start the return oil line and figure out extending the AFM harness..not much to go.

mcApr 19, 2005, 7:11 pm · #44

....I worked on extending the harness today...went to Home Depot and bought a large spool of 12 guage wire and soldered in 6 wires to reach the AFM in the rear..made a harness with zip ties and covered that with plastic flex tubing...looks really nice..anyone sell me a AFM HARNESS WITH CLIP??[holding up the project]....ordered the pump today as well.

vg30e_x2_200sxApr 19, 2005, 8:00 pm · #45

What happened to the one on the car? If you are extending the harness why don\'t you just reuse the one you have?

Clip the connector off and solder the wires in place of it. Then relocate it to the rear of the car.

JasterM5Apr 19, 2005, 8:01 pm · #46

Nope had no problems on the way home except that everytime i got to NYC i remember why i hate driving there. I was so scared I was gonna bend the lips on my new rims. Anyways I posted my Wiring diagram notes for my swap online so if you need to dl them heres the link:

thanks for the link......I didnt get much done today because I missed the UPS delivery of the pump....The AFM harness should be delivered tomorrow,so I should be able to get that out of the way.Today i cut off the drain tube from the turbo becauce it is too large .I replaced it with a 3/8\" nipple that will hook up to the pump.I also modified the oil filler screw on cap too accept a 3/8\" nipple so the oil can be pumped back into the engine.
