G'day,

I did the modification to the shifter, flipping the bush (pivot). Now i measured before and after and i have found:

Original Throw (1st - 2nd) = 125mm
Modified Throw (1st - 2nd) = 118mm

therefor the reduction in throw = 7mm

In my opinion, is the mod worth it?? Simple answer is no. Sure it takes only 10minutes to do, but its really not worth it. 7mm makes no difference at all when driving, if anything the shifter feels rough as it goes through the gates fron 1st into 2nd, and before anyone asks, my gearbox is healthy.

So there's the truth about the B-box's modification. But if you are one of those ppl who has the mentality, every "mm" counts, then go for it. Dont let me stop you.

Thats my 2 cents.

Good Luck with the mod if you chose to do it. I mean that in the nicest way, no sarcasm intended :) <---- even the smiley face looks evil!

Ah good that you measured it, somthing i never manage to do BEFORE i change somthing, i'm leaving the doribird like that to see how it goes. It did feel a bit shorter to me tho, placebo effect maybe.

Ok so that is about 9/32 of an inch...which isn't much in relation to the length of the shifter. However assuming that the throw from Neutral to first is 39 degrees, and from Neutral to 2nd is 39 degrees that makes the original circumference 170mm, and after is is 160mm (10mm difference). Direct from first to second goes from 156mm to 147mm (9mm difference). So even with geometry worked into the equation it is still not a very big difference. (If somebody finds a severe error with the math do not blame me. Blame AutoCad, Thanks) 8)

Mmmm this would be a good mod if my box could take my fast shifts.

I have to slowly ease it into gear so that the box doesnt crunch :hit:

Wow, I never measured it, but it sure felt like a big difference when I did it on mine. Although I never actually drove it after I did it. I had the tranny sitting on the floor, and just made engine noises and pretended...

Oh well, guess it was just a mental thing, kinda like flipping the air cleaner lid on the older V8's. Actually costs horsepower, but makes more noise, so it MUST be faster!!!

Wow I never actually knew that...I learn something every day...But today is different...today I learned something useful...8)

Well even if not much it is somewhat of an improvement. Also this was discussed on the old forum, but the 280's stock shifter is shorter, and can bolt right into the B tranny. I believe it may have been Nemesis that did it. This also means that aftermarket short shifters from the 280's can fit the B tranny guys...

well the top part may be shorter, but a real short shift kit has a longer shafter below the pivot point.

Apparently the bottom part of the shaft is longer on the 280's, but I do not have an example of one to prove this either way...possibly somebody who has this can measure...

i drove a stock s12 with about a third of the stick lopped off. it felt good to me. very sharp, but found 5th instead of 3rd on a couple of occasions.

Yea, I figures out the 280Zx shifter thing. It has the same bushing to flip around too. What i did to make it really look and feel short, it get an aftermatket shift knob and bottom it out on the shifter... Dont put one of those plastic things in there and try to screw it on, just push the knob all the way down on the lever and tighten the screws really tight. It wil dig into the shifter and also the top of the knob is the top of the shifter. But with that, you "feel" the tranny's quirks and grinds more. If you shift rough all the time, your hand may hurt if you do this... But its cool anyway. I just got a digicam and I'll post up comparison pics and a walkthrough soon :)
