So its not my first swap, about a month ago i swapped a 350 sbc into my 1981 280zx datsun/nissan. it turned out great so ive decided to get a bit more technical with these nissans. I have an automatic 1985 200sx, originally white, painted medium quasar blue, with louvers, turbo spoiler, turbo hood, and all the parts i could replace from slow'reillys as a high schooler.

Ive learned damn near every inch of this car... from ecu problems, rotted fuel pumps, to assembling the shell from boxes of bolts and body parts. After finally painting it (first painted car) i replaced the windshield and gave it a test drive.. (never overheat a car so bad from no coolant that surfaces oils catch smoke or pore antifreeze in during the fact) From all this ive got one car covered in cash, time, sweat, and blood

With one beloved car and a cracked block to go with it, i decided it would be best to swap the motor. 1st choice was the ca18det which was in the s12 in jap, but since this forum is so helpful and people enjoy putting the sr20det in those ugly ass 240sx (sorry not a fan) ive been reading for months, im pretty sure i know what every color wire powers, and every bolt torque is (maybe not so much torque)

well with that story mostly done, ive just picked up a 1990 240sx with a wrecked front end, no damage to the motor, no fluid leaks... photo time

motor was professionally installed by a shop

KA24de radiator in the hatch, but i think ill use the ca20, only thing that was damaged was the turbo exhaust downpipe from steering linkage

i plan on keeping the cruise control, air conditioning, full working digital dash, and adding a clutch pedal assembly (s12 originally auto), along with keeping as much of the airbox and ducting as i can.

the cable hold down should be a direct fit (havent checked) or ill swap spring assemblies

ill be keeping the fuel vacuum canister thing

these two plugs wire up the ecu relay & power, fuel pump relay, transmission neutral switch, o2 power, idle control, ac relay and ignition power.. the trick will be finding out which wires colors go to what from comparing wiring diagrams

i am going to try to get a factory 180sx intercooler to be hidden while using my ca20 airbox

s12 is now empty in the driveway waiting for an engine bay clean up and paint... i will be hiding and clearing up as much as i can

done in 2 hours, ca20 took 5... guess i warmed up, all i needed was an 8,10,12,14,17, flathead, philips, crescent wrench, razor, jacks, and hoist

to hell with the 240s nasty fuse block

the two wonder plugs

posted image

the white plug is easy to wire for the sr to 240 swap but i do need to look up how to pull it off for the s12

final note for now is i need to order the motor mounts, debating a new clutch, (motor was treated nice and driven for 2 months before crash) this show car work, so im hiding as much wire as i can but also keeping the car fully loaded

Sounds like a full wire tuck should be fun for you.

SlickS12Mar 30, 2009, 12:45 am · #3

wow you just took a huge picture dump on this forum, haha.  But it looks like you know what you're doing and it's coming along good. Good luck with the wiring issues. There's another member here that's done this swap and might be able to answer some a for you.

Oh and welcome

sideways_s12Mar 30, 2009, 12:53 am · #4

that's a beautiful car you have I've never seen a s12 that color....

JulieMar 30, 2009, 1:40 am · #5

all honesty, i dont care much for s13 hatches either. i recently parted a coupe that had severe rust damage then proceeded to take some anger out on it and draw on it a bit.

im a bit disappointed in the s13... the interior is far cheaper feeling then the s12, and it feels smaller. the interior complaints might be small considering the cars potential, but it matters to me since ill see that area the most. oh well... puts money in my pocket

good looking swap too

thanks.. like i said its a medium quasar blue, sounds like an odd color but its a gm paint that came on a few trucks in 1990 and corvettes

i just ordered a motor mount set, should have it by tues, went ahead and picked up a clutch kit for a maxima.. the plan is to paint a car i have in one car bay, through my 200 in, clean the engine bay and spray by the time i pick up my motor mounts...

on a side note, anyone know off hand if i can piece something for the trans mount from 200 & 240 parts.. i can get something fabbed up (set trans on a jack while wiring) but im aiming to have this started and running in the week, ive got work piling up and waiting for me
SlickS12Mar 30, 2009, 4:08 am · #7

Check out some of the ka/sr builds and they will show you what's needed to be done to the trans mount.  I believe all it consists of is a little slotting of the mounting holes.  Nothing too hard from what I hear.

ProwndApr 10, 2009, 7:28 am · #8

few things i ran into while tinkering away at the motor... i cant keep my cruize control... unless i swapped throttle bodys... but there is a smaller diameter on the ca20, so that was losing point #1.. cant keep ac, because i dont have the long bolts needed to mount the compressor,

i reduced a bit of wire,.. the clutch res. cables and cruise plug got caught up during motor install... besides that im going to tackle the rest of the wiring tom. and i added some hose adapters to the heater core feed to keep them over on the right side

David BApr 10, 2009, 7:45 am · #9

u might as well get a cheap aftermarket cruise control

cool swap!

i kick myself for not doing my engine bay

i thought of that while i was doing someone elses

yes it is.. if by that you mean base coat clear coat and not the shit in a can... why do you ask?
Nick_WApr 11, 2009, 1:33 am · #12

You sprayed all that yourself? It looks good!
And I like the color

ProwndApr 15, 2009, 9:32 am · #13

as of 7am tuesday the 13th my s12 is a running sr20det or maybe s12.5

XanoApr 15, 2009, 9:46 am · #14

LeegamerApr 15, 2009, 2:28 pm · #15

Damn, that was fast.

ProwndApr 18, 2009, 2:33 am · #16

thanks for the compliments, like i said... the motor is running but running rough,, when the motor was in the 240 it ran great... im thinking the vacuum lines may be something to do with it but i havent got into that yet... ill add a video link to this post so a heads up from someone that know what it would be would be great...

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v213/mat...nt=101_1457.flv

also i have a few wires that im wondering if i need to connect up... an blue/green wire that goes to the thermo control amplifier, and a set of pink and brown wires that go to the a.i.v control solenoid valve (guessing its a little silver box with JEGS on it?)

on the egr sensor( has black knob?) where do i connect the vacuum lines (aftermarket intercooler)

heres my wire tuck (right side engine bay i taped and shorted every wire to fit close in the area by the oil filter)

after everything is up and running how i want it to be im tucking all that i can under the fender and the relays will be hooked up in the stock position, im using the windshield wiper tank and pump but using the hatch spray line to mist the factory 180sx intercooler... (the 240 came with an intercooler system but the crash wrecked the lower part, im using what i can and i think its going to finish nicely)

and since the shifter is 3 inches back, im having a friend of mine weld the shifter with a corner that will fit under the center console... and the trans mount ended with using the s12 xmember, s13 trans mount and friend is fabbing a plate to move the mount 3inches back from the point the mount bolts up

In that vid of yours, the reason why it runs like that is because there is no intercooler pipings & intercooler installed. That's like basically a major destructive boost leak. Your air mass sensor itself was also not installed. If those were what you were referring to.

Looks good though.

actually i found that it was mostly because if the short throttle cable opening the intake with the addition of a broken wire to the maf sensor. idling the car is fine after that was fixed... since the last pics i have relocated the battery to behind the passenger seat and the intercooler piping is ran through the tray... drives on the road a bit.. little tweaks left

Great car/write up. What did you end up doing for the drive shaft or were you able to use one that you already had?

ive been using it for some other projects and its great stuff. something that works for me is before i spray my last coat of base is i'll mix a little clear into it the last base coat. then spray a good coat of just clear on top. it always comes out flatter and way glossier.

heres something i painted with that stuff....

I'm about to do this swap, any pointers on the wiring?  What wiring diagram/website did you use?  I hear the CA18 write up on this site is about as good as they come with the exception of the Tach for the SR

So do you prefer the FJ or the SR?

I like it!  Hey, do you have more pics of your headlights?  I have a set of those headlight grilles but dont know how to install them.  If you can send me more pictures of your headlights when they were on the ground, that would be great.

Did you get your 200 runing with that engine like it was factory?

dwardleJan 23, 2010, 1:23 am · #36

Yes, I had to wire up all of the items as described on many sections of this site (fuel pump, accessory, ECU backup power, electric fans, etc etc).  It runs like a champ, if you have any questions let me know.
