Hello!
This is a build tread about my drift / track S12. I have owned the car for a while, and it have been my daily driver. But I have newer done some real work to it. It was a orginal FJ20 car.

And has alot of aftermaket parts..
The FJ was a great engine, I even have turboed it with all forged stuff++. But I dont want a smal laggy turbo engine that is hyper expencive to fix..

So i did this

oh my god my dream

what are you doing for the driveshaft?

pix of oil plan clearance please

ls12Jan 12, 2010, 3:16 am · #3

The egnine is a 2004 LS1 V8 5.7L, same engine as the Corvette C5. Its all aluminium engine and does not weight much more then the FJ. The trans is a Tremec T56 6 speed manual trans.

I tried to get the engine as far back as posible. And its a tight fit! As you see here there is not much room for the headers on the driver side

Its a tight fit. Its a road racing sump.

the motor mount idea you got there is baller.... you were probally able to pivot the mount anywhere ... cut, move motor, then tack in place once you had desired height

ive always thought about using a s13 tension rod lol

ls12Jan 12, 2010, 3:24 am · #5

David I can get some better pics around the sump later today.
I got this road racing sump from Autocraft because the orginal sump would not let me put the engine this far back is the car. The orginal totally crashes with the crossmember. Much more then it does in the S13's. We have a smaller engine compartment then the s13's..

I think I need all the traction I can get. Moving the engine back gives me more weight on the rear wheels and thereby more traction. And better front rear balance, trying to get 50/50 weight in the front and rear.

was in the garage all day and made the headers done.

driver side header. this is only temporary headers. I will make ut some full lenght headers later, if I feel the need. Got some cheap headers and cut them up.
had to move one runner to make place for the steering shaft.
The diff and crossmember (is it called that in the rear also?) is solid mounted.

ls1 in a s12! thats so bad ass. here in missouri ls1's are king. there are alout of ls1 guys here even a few shop that specialize in building them. there are bunch of rx7's and 240's with em here. not allot of nissan guys around here.

nice build is this the first ls1 s12?

IggyEGuanaJan 13, 2010, 5:06 pm · #24

great job getting it in there.

the spot where u have the s13 rear coilover mounted on the control arm is not strong rnough to take the stresses.  Shouldnt be too hard to fabricate a new piece that occupies the same place but is much stronger.

cant wait to hear it fire up!

Wow.  What a build.  Can't wait to see more.  You actually painted the different sections of the diff, CV's, and half-shafts in contrasting colors.  Never have I seen such attention to detail.  Even without everything going on in the engine bay, that rear drivetrain/suspension work is very impressive.

ls12Jan 18, 2010, 2:42 pm · #34

Thanks for all the great comments

The firewall and trans tunnel was finished today, only needs painting. Also made a new throttle pedal mount, beacause the old one had to be removed to make more room for the engine. I actually used the whole GTO throttle pedal assembly
And I started on the rollcage. Made all the main bends. From the driver position the cage dont disturb the view at all
Will get pics of everything later this week

Thinking of the gear ratio in the rear. I have 4.11 and I think it will be to high with the LS1.
Anyone know of any car I car get a lower geared ring gear and pinion?

tommyJan 18, 2010, 5:38 pm · #35

Z31 uses the same long snout diff and is a direct bolt in...
I do believe that the early N/a used 3.5 or 3.7 diff but i'll dig a little deaper on the subject... or someone who knows the anwser can alway come forward and speak

*edit* here are the specs I found

# 84-87 NA = 3.7
# 88-89 NA = 3.9
# 84-86 Turbo = 3.54

I believe that the stock clutch type lsd unit found in the 87-88 turbo models uses a 3.7

So the best bet is to locate an early turbo 300zx and swap the whole diff... but with your whole color theme, you can always swap the front half and keep your housing

I need some help from you guys
I need some papers that tells that the S12 was delivered with the FJ20ET. I think thats the version who had the most power, 188hp. I need some papers thats says the S12 chassis can handle the power from the biggest engine it was delivered with.

Anyone who have anything like that? dont know how the papers look like in the different land' but everything can help

I need a copy your title and papers for your car

I need it to be able to drive on the street with this thing!

TheXevFeb 6, 2010, 12:10 am · #43

You don't have a title for your car?  Where did you get the body from, a junk yard?  Here in the states we'd get a salvage title or something along those lines.

ls12Mar 7, 2010, 12:22 pm · #44

Finally got some more work done

Cage is finish for now. Maybe add some door bars later, if I feel the need..
And sealed the trunk floor, ready for a fuel cell underneath it.

Cant wait to get the "interior" installed. Seats, pedals, windows, dash. And than start on the wiring

Thanks for all the comments

The front brakes I have are from a 300zx, z32. Same as Skyline. 4 pot aluminum calipers, bolt on s13 knuckles.

the rear calipers are from a skyline, almost bolt on. just need to trim the heatshield a little. I cant use the old mecanical hand brake with this caliper, but I am going for a hydraulic one anyways
