What the heck kinda cam sprocket is that?

What the heck kinda cam sprocket is that?

Thats a vernier pulley.

It is used to be able to dial in the camshaft accuratley. On a normal engine there is no adjustment. So if a head was skimmed or a thicker head gasket was used, the distance between the bottom and top pulley can vary which can slightly retard or advance the cam.

I'm using a wide duration cam. Therefore the full lift point of the cam has changed in relation to the crank cycle. It's approx half a notch out so when using the standard pulley the cam isn't dialed in to what the cam specs require, so the adjustable pulley takes care of this.

wow where'd you get that from?

bartc_jdate not saved · #105

looks like a custom unit too me

30PSIdate not saved · #106

Yeah its custom.

I will be selling this head and inlet manifold at the end of the year to fit a DET head.

Did you make the cam sprocket or is there a shop you can coax into making it for us?

30PSIdate not saved · #108

They used to make them years ago, its a non earner for them really.

Someone over here in the UK borrowed mine to make a copy of it.

A good machine shop will make something from scratch, best have a hunt about for general pics of a vernier pulley.

A cam timing principle book will probably go into making one from scratch.

Hmm you said you are planning on installing a CA18DET head and going full CA18DET, right? So do us all a favor and have a local place draw up dimentions for us, then just post the dimentions up on the club site (not the forum but where the FAQ section is) so we can just print that out and take it to a machine shop.

We could dedicate an S12 holiday to you. "30PSI's Cam Sprocket Day" or some other nonsense like that ;)

First off here are some pics:

You will all have to wait until the head's off to be able to make good measurements.

Measurements aren't essential as the circle cut out of the pulley could be various sizes as long as its matched by the new inner piece it shouldn't be difficult to machine the elongated holes and tap 4 threads into the original part of the pulley. They key way can be copied from the piece thats been cut out.

The pics are what I needed most, that is awesome, thanks a billion dude.

whot would be the adwantages of retracting or moving forword the timing in the sohc engine in dohc u mahe exhous open sooner and intake close later and that can give some HP but in sohc u mova all the timing.

that's why he's using it.....

Still need to dial in the cam to make sure that it is in phase with the rest of the motor. It will definetly make a big difference if the whole cam is retarded or advanced.

Arro, once I get good with the CNC machine that is on the way to our shop, I might start messing with trying to make something like that. That is unless Mr. Bob or Bart already has something like that in store...

Arrodate not saved · #115

Go ahead and make it, if you ome in cheaper than someone else, you'll end up favored. Thats about it. In fact I'd rather you just did it, we need more than two people offering up products for us. Who knos, what you make might be better than someone else's. Not all parts are created equal.

bartc_jdate not saved · #116

sweet from those pics i can have very similiar units made...

30PSIdate not saved · #117

The vernier pulley isn't obviously essential. You could find you fit it and it turns out the standard pulley would have been fine. However you have knowledge in the fact that you definitely know its timed up correctly and you have the benefits of experimenting with small advance/retard by up to +-4 deg's.

Its prob more beneficial on a car with an uprated cam.

What have you US guys got for a higher spec cam?

Joel07date not saved · #118

Right now it's either the Euro cam, or a custom ground cam as far as I know.

30PSIdate not saved · #119

In the UK Piper do a cam regrind. It extends the duration from 254 to 268 with 1mm extra lift.

Is the euro cam the standard UK cam?

What cam spec do you have as standard then?

bartc_jdate not saved · #120

yes its the standard european cam...

What cam spec do you have as standard then?

234duration and .314lift i believe but i have to check my fsm

That is seriously low!

Do you use different rockers?
